Teaching classic put to the test: Do tongue twisters work for L2 pronunciation?
2023
Tongue twisters are a controversial pronunciation teaching classic. Whereas some see tongue twisters difficult and frustrating for learners, others find them fun and motivating. This study was inspired by these opposing views and the fact that previous studies have failed to offer convincing proof of whether this technique works for L2 pronunciation learning. This study approaches the question with a teaching experiment. Participants were 28 learners of L2 Swedish. Half of them trained with tongue twisters and half with authentic sentences. Training focussed on two sounds typically difficult for the learners, who were tested before and after the training period. Further, the participants we…

Fighting performance as a predictor of mating success in male black grouse
2010
As a consequence of certain conflicting evolutionary interests of males and females, the sexes have taken on different reproductive roles. In many species, where females invest more in the production of offspring, males compete for the opportunities to reproduce and females attempt to choose the highest quality males to sire their offspring. Males of different species signal their quality in a variety of ways, including physical cues such as color signals or exaggerated secondary sexual characters, behavioral signals and acquisition of a dominance status through aggression towards other males. In the lekking black grouse only a few males manage to copulate and active fighting is required fo…

Yhteisöllisyys uskollisuuden huipentumana : yhteisöllisyyden käsite teleoperaattorialalla
2010
Teleoperaattorialalla kilpailu asiakkaista on kovaa.
Clustering of vocabulary for different levels of Finnish learners of EFL : a content analysis on textbooks
2016
Sanaston oppiminen on keskeisimpiä edellytyksiä vieraan kielen oppimiselle, jonka vuoksi vieraiden kielten oppikirjojen tulisi panostaa erityisesti tapoihin, joilla uutta sanastoa opetetaan oppijoille. Semanttinen klusterointi, eli saman-kaltaisen semanttisen sisällön omaavien sanojen ryhmittäminen, on perinteisesti ollut pääasiallinen tapa ryhmittää sanoja oppikirjoissa. Viimeaikainen tutkimus (Finkbeiner & Nicol 2003; Schneider et al. 2002; Papathanasiou 2009; Erten & Tekin 2008; Wilcox & Medina 2013) kuitenkin näyttää osoittavan, että semanttinen klusterointi heikentäisi uusien sanojen oppimista ja vaikeuttaisi niiden muistamista. Semanttisen klusteroinnin sijaan ehdotetaan temaattista k…
Semantic versus thematic clustering of new lexical items : a textbook analysis
2015
Vocabulary acquisition is an essential part of learning a second language, yet textbook designers and language educators often have difficulties with creat-ing such vocabulary acquisition exercises and materials that would best en-hance the development of this crucial skill. There is indeed a growing body of evidence suggesting that semantic clustering of new lexical items impedes L2 vocabulary acquisition, but still semantic clustering is the prevalent meth-od used in contemporary EFL textbooks. This study focused on one EFL book series in particular, which can justifiably be seen as a representative of all contemporary beginner-level EFL textbooks in Finnish elementary schools. The conten…
When did biopolitics begin? : Actuality and potentiality in historical events
2022
The article addresses the ongoing debate about the origins of biopolitics. While Foucault’s analysis of biopolitics approached it as a modern rationality of government, Agamben’s Homo Sacer series presented biopolitics as having a longer provenance, dating back to the antiquity. These polar positions are not mutually exclusive but coexist in these and other theories of biopolitics, which approach its object as both modern and ancient, having its chronological origin in the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries yet also possessing a prehistory of precursors. The article interprets this dual origin in terms of Paolo Virno’s theory of historical temporality, which distinguishes between the chron…
On Temporal Aspects in Cross-Cultural e-Collaboration Between Finland and Japan Research Teams
2018
Time is an essential dimension in cross-cultural e-collaboration among research project teams. Understanding temporal aspects and project dynamics in cross-cultural research e-collaboration and related processes can improve team members' skills in cross-cultural communication and increase their cultural competence. The present case cultures are Finnish and Japanese, and the case universities are the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) and Keio University (Japan). Three issues are addressed in this article. First, cultural dimensions and time models in the cross-cultural e-collaboration context are discussed. Second, temporal aspects related to e-collaboration activities are introduced. Third,…
"Tentative lessons of experience: Arendt, essayism, and ""the social"" reconsidered"
2014
The article addresses the role of the essay in Hannah Arendt’s theorizing. By paying attention to Arendt’s style, we are better able to draw the full conclusions from the well-known fact that she was not a system-builder but took her bearings from concrete experiences. First, the concept of experience—too often taken at face value—is explicated. It is argued that Arendt’s understanding of the concept cannot be reduced to her personal experiences, but must be read against the background of the common world. A crucial dimension in the incorporation of experiences into the Arendtian political theory is the essayistic style of her writings. The essay, as an experimental and tentative platform,…
