Sulfur-free pulping of hot-water-extracted spruce sawdust

Softwood (Picea abies) sawdust was hot-water-extracted with two multi-phase processes (160-180°C, 100-280 min, and liquor-to-wood ratio 5 l/kg) corresponding to P-factors of ~780 (yield 80.0%) and ~4580 (yield 72.4%). The pre-treated materials were then pulped with the soda-AQ cooking (170°C, NaOH charge 20%, AQ charge 0.1%, 30-150 min, and liquor-to-wood ratio 5 l/kg), resulting in a yield range of 36.1-61.4% (for reference cooks without pre-extraction 47.9-60.0%). Simplifying Probabilistic Expressions in Causal Inference

Obtaining a non-parametric expression for an interventional distribution is one of the most fundamental tasks in causal inference. Such an expression can be obtained for an identifiable causal effect by an algorithm or by manual application of do-calculus. Often we are left with a complicated expression which can lead to biased or inefficient estimates when missing data or measurement errors are involved. We present an automatic simplification algorithm that seeks to eliminate symbolically unnecessary variables from these expressions by taking advantage of the structure of the underlying graphical model. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää vastuuhoitajien käsityksiä jaetusta johtajuudesta ja rooliin liittyvästä toimijuudesta. Tutkimukseen osallistuneet sairaanhoitajat työskentelivät sairaalan päivystysyksikön vastuuhoitajajärjestelmässä. Vastuuhoitajana toimiva sairaanhoitaja työskentelee työvuorokohtaisesti työnjohtajana. Järjestelmää kehittäessä johtajuutta, valtaa ja vastuuta on jaettu työtehtävien muutoksen myötä. Tämä on samalla tuonut muutoksia vastuuhoitajarooliin, jota kuvataan käsitteellä roolitoimijuus. Tutkimus on toteutettu laadullisilla tutkimusmenetelmillä. Social information, acquired through the observation of other individuals, is especially relevant among species belonging to the same guild. The unpredictable and ephemeral nature of carrion implies that social mechanisms may be selected among scavenger species to facilitate carcass location and consumption. Here, we apply a survival-modelling strategy to data obtained through the placement and monitoring of carcasses in the field to analyse possible information transmission cascades within a Neotropical scavenger community. Keskeisenä kysymyksenä on, millä reunaehdoilla annetun kompkatikantajaisen ja äärellisen Borel-mitan Fourier muunnos vähenee polynomiaalisesti (eli sitä voidaan dominoida jollain euklidisen normin negatiivisella potenssilla) kaikkialla riittävän kaukana tai ainakin ”keskimääräisesti”. [EN] We describe experimentally and theoretically the concentration-dependent conduction of tetraalkylammonium (TAA+) cations through a nanofluidic diode fabricated in a polymer membrane via asymmetric track-etching techniques. This single-pore membrane exhibits current rectification characteristics because of the ionized carboxylate groups on the pore surface. We use aqueous solutions of potassium (K+ ), ammonium (A+ ), tetramethylammonium (TMA+ ), tetraethylammonium (TEA+ ), and tetrabutylammonium (TBA+ ) ions with concentrations ranging from 50 to 500 mM under acidic (pH 3.5) and physiological (pH 6.5) conditions. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin millaisia tarpeita ja toiveita kotona asuvilla muistisairailla ja heidän läheisillään on kotona asumista tukevaan teknologiaan liittyen. Tutkimukseen osallistui 25 kotona asuvaa muistisairasta henkilöä ja 25 heidän läheistään. Metodina käytettiin etnografista tutkimusotetta. Aineistonkeruumenetelminäolivat avoin haastattelua ja havainnointi. Analyysimenetelmänä käytettiin sisällön analyysiä. Tarpeet ja toiveet voitiin luokitella kolmeen pääluokkaan, jotka olivat itsemääräämisoikeuden säilyminen, sosiaalisten suhteiden säilyminen ja liikkumisen oikeus ja turvallisuus. Physical activity history and end-of-life hospital and long-term care

Background: Little is known about the early predictors of need for care in late life. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether physical activity from midlife onward was associated with hospital and long-term care in the last year of life. Methods: We studied a decedent population of 846 persons aged 66–98 years at death, who, on average 5.8 years prior to death, had participated in an interview about their current and earlier physical activity. Data on the use of care in the last year of life are register-based data and complete. Background: high job strain increases the risk of health decline, but little is known about the specific consequences and long-term effects of job strain on old age health. Objectives: purpose was to investigate whether physical and mental job strain in midlife was associated with hospital care use in old age.
