The element chemistry of biogenic carbonates can provide important data on past environments. However, the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios as well as the Mg and Sr concentrations of biological carbonates, especially aragonitic bivalves often depart from apparent thermodynamic equilibrium. When measured in situ by means of LA-ICP-MS, the Mg concentration is often substantially enriched (two- to threefold) near the organic-rich, annual growth lines. Publisher Summary This chapter describes the transport systems and the corresponding carrier proteins involved in the L-arginine transport that have been described till date. The chapter also discusses the methods that have been used to characterize L-arginine transport in nitric oxide (NO) producing cells or tissues. L-arginine transport is mediated by multiple carrier systems, some of which have not yet been identified at a molecular level. Electron microscopy and biochemical characterization of a 350-kDa annular hemolymph protein from the keyhole limpet Megathura crenulata

The isolation and biochemical characterization of an annular non-hemocyanin hemolymph protein from a marine gastropod, the Californian giant keyhole limpet (Megathura crenulata) is presented. By analytical ultracentrifugation, the protein has a sedimentation coefficient of 12S and molecular mass of approximately 350 kDa. The subunit mass, obtained by SDS/PAGE in the presence of -SH reagent and 8 M urea, is approximately 35 kDa, thereby indicating the presence of 10 subunits in the native molecule. The mucilage content of structurally differing myxospermatic diaspores from 49 species belonging to 19 families ofAngiospermae has been determined by applying various extraction procedures. The results demonstrate no obvious relationship between the size, mucilage quantity, and the swelling factor of the diaspores studied. Furthermore, mucilage producing structures and structural peculiarities of the mucilages themselves are elaborated.

Composition and Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oils ofCladanthus arabicusCass. (Asteraceae)

Abstract The chemical composition of the essential oils of the aerial parts (stems and leaves: sample A) and flowers (sample B) of Cladanthus arabicus Cass., were analysed by GC-MS. Monoterpenes hydrocarbons constituted the main chemical group in both essential oils, with Sabinene, β-pinene, α-pinene, myrcene, α-phellandrene and p-cymene as the main compounds. Sample A was tested for its antimicrobial activity against six Gram positive and negative bacteria. Results showed that the oil exhibited a significant antibacterial activity.

Thalassobius mediterraneus gen. nov., sp. nov., and reclassification of Ruegeria gelatinovorans as Thalassobius gelatinovorus comb. nov.

A Gram-negative, slightly halophilic, non-pigmented, strictly aerobic, chemo-organotrophic bacterium was isolated from sea water off the western Mediterranean coast near Valencia (Spain). This strain was able to grow on several organic acids and amino acids added to a minimal medium as carbon sources, but used few carbohydrates or yielded slight growth when sugars were used. Phylogenetic analysis based on an almost complete 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain XSM19T was a member of the Roseobacter group within the ‘Alphaproteobacteria’, with its closest phylogenetic neighbour being Ruegeria gelatinovorans (97·6 % sequence similarity). SYNOPSIS. Sponges [Porifera] are the phylogenetically oldest metazoan phylum still extant today; they share the closest relationship with the hypothetical common metazoan ancestor, the Urmetazoa. During the past 8 years cDNAs coding for proteins involved in cell-cell- and cell-tissue interaction have been cloned from sponges, primarily from Suberites domuncula and Geodia cydonium and their functions have been studied in vivo as well as in vitro. A new arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species, Diversispora valentina, is described and illustrated. In the field, this species is associated with marine dunes located along the Mediterranean coast in eastern Spain. Spores of D. valentina occurred in sporocarps, in clusters, and singly in the soil or inside the roots of Ammophila arenaria (Poaceae), Elymus farctus (Poaceae), Otanthus maritimus (Asteraceae), and Echinophora spinosa (Apiaceae) in the six locations studied. A single-species culture of D. valentina was obtained using Trifolium repens as a host plant. Two types of large, branched structures from the Lower Pleistocene (Calabrian) high-energy calcarenites of Favignana Island are described: Faviradixus robustus gen. et sp. nov. and Egadiradixus rectibrachiatus gen. et sp. nov. They may be interpreted as root structures of large plants, trees and trees or shrubs, respectively.
