Racism and ethics in the globalized business world
2002
This paper analyzes the concept of racism in the context of business ethics and globalization. It first introduces three ethical traditions to understand moral issues in business: deontological, utilitarian and virtue ethics. Then it discusses about the challenges and demands that globalization has set to multicultural and multinational business operations. Third, it clarifies how racism works when it is understood as an ideology‐based phenomenon. It argues that there is a great value of knowing how racism works for the development of an anti‐racist and nondiscriminating organization. Although any of the three traditions on ethical thinking does not give direct answer to the question of how…
2018
The purpose of this article is to show how, in the United States, some states and school districts are transforming their curriculum through ethnic studies. Ethnic studies exists as a result of unequal power relations in which historically marginalized groups have not had the power to define how education will serve their own communities. According to its activists, ethnic studies not only teaches about the cultures of diverse groups, but also reconstructs, the curriculum around the counter-narratives perspectives, epistemologies, and visions of groups that have been treated historically as if their experiences and perspectives were of lesser value. The article begins with a theoretical fra…

'The Power of the N-Word in Tarantino's Films: Black Intolerance and/or White Audacity?'
2018
Quentin Tarantino is a controversial figure, whose trademark use of offensive language and explicit violence have, in particular, been subject to censure. A source of consternation for his detractors is the constant use of the N-word. In this article, I offer a detailed examination of the use of the N-word by white people in a broad range of discursive contexts. I begin with a quantitative analysis in the eight films directed by Tarantino -Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Jackie Brown (1997), Four Rooms (1995), Kill Bill (vol. I & II) (2003 & 2004), Death Proof (2007), Inglorious Basterds (2009), and Django Unchained(2013) - followed by choice phrases extracted from those films i…
“What you do to Children Matters”: Motherhood in Toni Morrison's God Help the Child
2015
Toni Morrison’s latest novel, God Help the Child, explores the damaging effects of racism on motherhood and the dramatic impact of toxic mothering upon children. The institution of patriarchal motherhood fails to enact the critical tasks of motherwork —preservation, nurturance and cultural bearing, while mothering is a potential site of empowerment of black children and African American culture. African American authoritarian parenting style, associated with patriarchal motherhood, has a correlation with diverse factors, such as the legacy of slavery and its survival strategies, low-income and/or single-parent households and the disruption of the motherline. Motherhood distorted by racism c…
