Exploring the properties of MTO4compounds using high-pressure powder x-ray diffraction
2015
Several ternary oxides with industrial applications, but also interesting for basic research, have been studied recently at room temperature under high-pressure conditions using synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction. In this article, part of these experiments will be summarized. The studied materials include zircon-type vanadates and scheelite-type tungstates as well as other oxides related to them. Several pressure-induced structural phase transitions that take place in these compounds under compression will be here described. In addition, the determination of the crystal structure of the high-pressure phases will be discussed. The reported studies have also allowed the accurate determinati…
GdBO3 and YBO3 crystals under compression
2021
High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies on nanocrystals of the GdBO3 and YBO3 rare-earth orthoborates are herein reported up to 17.4(2) and 13.4(2) GPa respectively. The subsequent determination of the room-temperature pressure-volume equations of state is presented and discussed in the context of contemporary publications which contradict the findings of this work. In particular, the isothermal bulk moduli of GdBO3 and YBO3 are found to be 170(13) and 163(13) GPa respectively, almost 50% smaller than recent findings. Our experimental results provide an accurate revision of the high-pressure compressibility behaviour of GdBO3 and YBO3 which is consistent with the known systematics in isomor…
Ultraviolet holographic recording in photopolymers
2011
Norland Optical Adhesive (NOA) acrylate based photopolymers were studied as a medium for Bragg grating fabrication. NOA photopolymers have absorption maximum in near UV region, but they are transparent in visible light region. Photopolymers were irradiated by He-Cd laser 325 nm line interference patterns during holographic recording. In light irradiated regions photopolymerization takes place and volume grating can be recorded. Diffraction efficiency in dependence on sample thickness, recording beams polarization state and intensity was investigated on transmission mode. Enlargement of sample thickness allows to achieve better angular selectivity of diffracted beam, therefore thickness of p…
The mechanically activated combustion reaction in the Fe–Si system: in situ time-resolved synchrotron investigations
2002
Mechanical high-energy ball milling of Fe+2Si elemental powder mixtures was used to activate self sustaining combustion reaction in the case of iron disilicide synthesis. The reaction path as well as the influence of the microstructural parameters on phase transformation have been investigated in detail. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) using the fast recording kinetics offered by the synchrotron radiation was coupled to an infrared camera in order to study the internal structure of the combustion wave. The crystallite size and the amount of mechanically induced phases play an important role during the combustion; the reaction path and the end product composition mainly depend on the…
Theoretical study of an absorbing sample in infrared near-field spectromicroscopy
2004
Abstract This paper is devoted to study the near-field spectrometry in the infrared spectral range. To understand the behavior of the infrared light diffracted by an object, numerical calculations have been carried out with Fourier Modale (FM) method within R-matrix algorithm. We consider the case of three-dimensional system including a translational symmetry in one direction, where is included an homogenous layer in which is buried an absorbing object. Using an optical near-field analysis and by calculating the electric field intensity distribution, both of the thickness effect and the lateral size of the absorbing sample are investigated. It is found that the distribution of the intensity…
Liquid crystal spatial light modulator with very large phase modulation operating in high harmonic orders.
2013
Unusually large phase modulation in a commercial liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM) is reported. Such a situation is obtained by illuminating with visible light a device designed to operate in the infrared range. The phase modulation range reaches 6π radians in the red region of the visible spectrum and 10π radians in the blue region. Excellent diffraction efficiency in high harmonic orders is demonstrated despite a concomitant and non-negligible Fabry–Perot interference effect. This type of SLM opens the possibility to implement diffractive elements with reduced chromatic dispersion or chromatic control.
Mechanically Activated SHS Reaction in the Fe-Al System: In Situ Time Resolved Diffraction Using Synchrotron Radiation
1998
The Mechanical Activation Self propagating High temperature Synthesis (M.A.S.H.S.) processing is a new way to produce nanocrystalline iron aluminide intermetallic compounds. This process is maily the combination of two steps ; in the one hand, a mechanical activation where the Fe - Al powder mixture was milled during a short time at given energy and frequency of shocks and in the other hand, a Self propagating High temperature Synthesis (S.H.S.) reaction, for which the exothermicity of the Fe + Al reaction is used. This fast propagated MASHS reaction has been in -situ investigated using the Time Resolved X - Ray Diffraction (TRXRD) using a X - ray synchrotron beam and an infrared thermograp…
Short and long range order of Half-Heusler phases in (Ti,Zr,Hf)CoSb thermoelectric compounds
2016
Abstract The structural properties of (Ti,Zr,Hf)CoSb thermoelectric Half-Heusler compounds were investigated by synchrotron radiation based techniques. The short-range order, in particular the environment of the Co atoms, was studied by extended X-Ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and the long range order by powder X-Ray diffraction. Structural models were obtained for the single phase materials TiCoSb0.85Sn0.15, ZrCoSb0.85Sn0.15, and HfCoSb0.85Sn0.15. These models were transferred for the phase-separated material Ti0.5Hf0.5CoSb0.85Sn0.15. As a result, proving that each Half-Heusler phase was well ordered, apart from the intermixing of Ti and Hf on its designated crystallographic l…
A wideband THz Time Domain Spectroscopy table-top system based on ultrafast pulsed laser: Model and experiments
2014
We present an analytical model carefully describing the time-frequency behavior of all the stages composing our whole Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy laser based system, from the THz pulses generation via Optical Rectification, to their detection through Electro-Optic Sampling technique, by way of diffraction, collecting and focusing effects. In order to prove the effectiveness of our work, we report on the comparison among the experimental waveforms and the simulation results.
Effect of Penetrating Irradiation on Polarization Reversal in PZT Thin Films
2006
Spatially non-uniform imprint behavior induced by X-ray synchrotron, electron, and neutron irradiation has been investigated in Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films. The obtained effects have been explained as a result of acceleration of the bulk screening process induced by irradiation. It has been shown that the spatial distribution of the internal bias field is determined by the domain pattern existing during irradiation. The microstructural changes in the structural characteristics during fatigue cycling have been revealed by high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments. Their correlation with the evolution of the switching characteristics has been revealed and discussed.
