Study of the angular acceptance of surface plasmon Bragg mirrors

Surface plasmon based photonic devices are promising candidates for highly integrated optics. A surface plasmon (SP) is basically an electromagnetic wave confined in the interface between a metal and a dielectric, and is due to the interaction of the electromagnetic field with the surface bounded electron charges in the metal. A SP can propagate along the interface where it is confined (the propagation length being tens of micrometers in the visible range), but its associated electromagnetic field decreases exponentially in the perpendicular direction, in such a way that this vertical confinement makes SP very attractive for the design of optical devices in coplanar geometry. Modelling of phase boundaries for large industrial FZ silicon crystal growth with the needle-eye technique

In order to facilitate the numerical calculations of the phase boundaries in large industrial floating zone silicon crystal growth with the needle-eye technique, the chain of improved mathematical models is developed. The phase boundaries are solved in a partly transient way and the modelling improvements cover the open melting front, the inner triple point and the free melt surface. The view factors model is applied for the radiative heat transfer. The electromagnetic field is calculated with account of a multiple-slit inductor.

Some effects of a buried electricity transmission cable on bulk soil.

A case study in NW Italy investigating an underground electric line (1 m depth triple cable at operative voltages 220-380 kV) measured electric fields in the surrounding soil virtually close to zero but magnetic fields (microTs) 20 times the background level. After 6 months, the influence radius around the cable on microbial activity (estimated by soil ATP), organic carbon, and total nitrogen follows exactly the inverse trend of the MF, shifting the biological activity with a lag distance of 5 m from the 220 kV cable.

Silencing and enhancement of second-harmonic generation in optical gap antennas

International audience; Amplifying local electromagnetic fields by engineering optical interactions between individual constituents of an optical antenna is considered fundamental for efficient nonlinear wavelength conversion in nanometer-scale devices. In contrast to this general statement we show that high field enhancement does not necessarily lead to an optimized nonlinear activity. In particular, we demonstrate that second-harmonic responses generated at strongly interacting optical gap antennas can be significantly suppressed. Recent reports about propulsion without reaction mass have been met on one hand with enthusiasm and on the other hand with some doubts. Namely, closed metal cavities, when fueled with microwaves, have delivered thrust that could eventually maintain satellites on orbits using solar power. Generation of even harmonics of sub-THz radiation in bulk GaAs in the presence of a static electric field

The static electric field effects on nonlinear carrier dynamics in low-doped GaAs bulk under the influence of an intense sub-terahertz field are studied by a three-dimensional multivalleys Monte Carlo simulation. The conversion efficiency is calculated by using the appropriate Maxwell equation for the propagation of an electromagnetic wave along a given direction in the medium. Production of odd and even harmonics due to the nonlinearity of the velocity-field relation is investigated.

A method of variation of boundaries for waveguide grating couplers

We describe a method for calculating the solution of the electromagnetic field in a non-rectilinear open waveguide by using a series expansion, starting from the field of a rectilinear waveguide. Our approach is based on a method of variation of boundaries. We prove that the obtained series expansion converges and we provide a radiation condition at infinity in such a way that the problem has a unique solution. Our approach can model several kinds of optical devices which are used in optical integrated circuits. Numerical examples will be shown for the case of finite aperiodic waveguide grating couplers.

Analytical evaluation of integrals occurring in bound-free transitions.

A class of three-dimensional integrals on spatial coordinates of the type occurring in treatments of multiphoton ionization of atoms and of other bound-free transitions is evaluated in closed form for both hydrogenic and Slater-type wave functions. The reported method of evaluation is illustrated with a number of examples, including the multiphoton ionization of hydrogen by a very intense laser field, when the ejected electrons have absorbed more photons than the minimum required to reach the continuum.

Van der Waals Interactions in a Magneto-Dielectric Medium

The van der Waals interaction between two ground-state atoms is calculated for two electrically or magnetically polarizable particles embedded in a dispersive magneto-dielectric medium. Unlike previous calculations which infer the atom-atom interaction from the dilute-medium limit of the macroscopic, many-body van der Waals interaction, the interaction is calculated directly for the system of two atoms in a magneto-dielectric medium.
