Study of the reactive dynamics of nanometric metallic multilayers using Molecular Dynamics: the Al−Ni system

A molecular dynamics study of a layered Ni-Al-Ni system is developed using an embedded atom method potential. The specific geometry is designed to model a Ni-Al nanometric metallic multilayer. The system is initially thermalized at the fixed temperature of 600 K. We first observe the interdiffusion of Ni and Al at the interfaces, which is followed by the spontaneous phase formation of B2-NiAl in the Al layer. The solid-state reaction is associated with a rapid system's heating which further enhances the diffusion processes. NiAl phase is organized in small regions separated by grain boundaries. The ARGO-YBJ experiment detects extensive air showers in a wide energy range by means of a full-coverage detector which is in stable data taking in its full configuration since November 2007 at the YBJ International Cosmic Ray Observatory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, People's Republic of China). The fate of silver ions in the photochemical synthesis of gold nanorods: an Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure analysis

Water-soluble gold nanorods (Au NRs) were synthesized using a silver-ion mediated photochemical route under UV irradiation. Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurements on the Ag K-edge were performed on samples obtained at different Ag/Au ratios and at increasing irradiation times in order to investigate the fate of silver ions during the growth of Au NRs. EXAFS measurements allowed to probe the chemical state and the local environment of silver in the final product. Experimental data suggest that Ag atoms are placed on top of the Au particles as metallic Ag(0), while no significant contribution to the EXAFS spectra comes from AgBr or other Ag(+) based species. Application of the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy to a study of the local atomic structure in perovskitetype materials is discussed on the example of several compounds (m-WO3, NaxWO3, ReO3 and FeF3). The MIRS software for the modeling of ro-vibrational spectra of polyatomic molecules was considerably extended and improved. The original version (Nikitin, et al. JQSRT, 2003, pp. 239--249) was especially designed for separate or simultaneous treatments of complex band systems of polyatomic molecules. In this article, we experimentally investigated the optical responses of coupled gold antenna pairs and measured the critical parameters defining antenna characteristics: resonant frequencies and bandwidths, detuning and gains, and radiation patterns.
Direct validation of FVC, LAI and FAPAR VEGETATION/SPOT derived products using LSA SAF methodology

The aim of this work is to perform a direct validation of fraction of vegetation cover (FVC), leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) resulting products from applying the LSA SAF methodology to VEGETATION BRDF data. LSA SAF adapted algorithms were tested in adequate test sites comprising different continental biomes covering a wide range of FVC, LAI and FAPAR values. Results seem to indicate the competitiveness of LSA SAF proposed methodology to retrieve remotely sensed biophysical parameters. Search for ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles with the Pierre Auger Observatory

We present a search for ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles with the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such particles, possibly a relic of phase transitions in the early universe, would deposit a large amount of energy along their path through the atmosphere, comparable to that of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The air shower profile of a magnetic monopole can be effectively distinguished by the fluorescence detector from that of standard UHECRs. No candidate was found in the data collected between 2004 and 2012, with an expected background of less than 0.1 event from UHECRs. Search for relativistic magnetic monopoles with the ANTARES neutrino telescope

Magnetic monopoles are predicted in various unified gauge models and could be produced at intermediate mass scales. Their detection in a neutrino telescope is facilitated by the large amount of light emitted compared to that from muons. This paper reports on a search for upgoing relativistic magnetic monopoles with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using a data set of 116 days of live time taken from December 2007 to December 2008. The one observed event is consistent with the expected atmospheric neutrino and muon background, leading to a 90% C.L. upper limit on the monopole flux between 1.3 ¿ 10¿17 and 8.9 ¿ 10¿17 cm¿2 s¿1 sr¿1 for monopoles with velocity ß ¿ 0.625.
