Search for Axionlike Particles Produced in e+e− Collisions at Belle II

2020

We present a search for the direct production of a light pseudoscalar a decaying into two photons with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We search for the process e+e-→γa, a→γγ in the mass range 0.2<ma<9.7 GeV/c2 using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (445±3) pb-1. Light pseudoscalars interacting predominantly with standard model gauge bosons (so-called axionlike particles or ALPs) are frequently postulated in extensions of the standard model. We find no evidence for ALPs and set 95% confidence level upper limits on the coupling strength gaγγ of ALPs to photons at the level of 10-3 GeV-1. The limits are the most restrictive to date for 0.2<ma<1 GeV/c2.

Elliptic Flow of Charged Particles in Pb-Pb Collisions atsNN=2.76  TeV

2010

We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) p = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2 < p(t) < 5.0 GeV/c. The elliptic flow signal v(2), measured using the 4-particle correlation method, averaged over transverse momentum and pseudorapidity is 0.087 +/- 0.002(stat) +/- 0.003(syst) in the 40%-50% centrality class. The differential elliptic flow v(2)(p(t)) reaches a maximum of 0.2 near p(t) = 3 GeV/c. Compared to RHIC Au-Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV, the elliptic f…

Radiative corrections in Dalitz decays of π0, η and η′ mesons

2019

We briefly summarize current experimental and theoretical results on the two important processes of the low-energy hadron physics involving neutral pions: the Dalitz decay of π0 and the rare decay π0 → e+e−. As novel results we present the complete set of radiative corrections to the Dalitz decays η(′) → l+l−γ beyond the soft-photon approximation, i.e. over the whole range of the Dalitz plot and with no restrictions on the energy of a radiative photon. The corrections inevitably depend on the η(′) → γ*γ(*) transition form factors.

Search for contact interactions in the reactionse + e −→l + l − ande + e −→γγ

1993

Contact interactions are searched for using the differential cross sections for the reactions e + e -→ e + e -, e + e -→ µ + µ -, e + e -→ τ + τ - and e + e -→γγ measured at 12 energies around the Z peak and corresponding to about 20 pb-1 of cumulated luminosity. Four-fermion contact term models assuming various chiralities of lepton currents are fitted to the lepton data and lower limits on the energy scale Λ of such terms are set at 95% c.l. The limits vary in the range 0.9 4.7 TeV, depending on the model and on the lepton flavour. The eeγγ contact terms are searched for assuming various chiralities. Limits on the energy scale Λ between 79 and 130 GeV are extracted from the data. The resu…

Measurement of Helicity-Dependent Photoabsorption Cross Sections on the Neutron from 815 to 1825 MeV

2005

Helicity-dependent total photoabsorption cross sections on the deuteron have been measured for the first time at ELSA (Bonn) in the photon energy range from 815 to 1825 MeV. Circularly polarized tagged photons impinging on a longitudinally polarized LiD target have been used together with a highly efficient 4pi detector system. The data around 1 GeV are not compatible with predictions from existing multipole analyses. From the measured energy range an experimental contribution to the GDH integral on the neutron of [33.9 +/- 5.5(stat) +/- 4.5(syst)] microb is extracted.

Radiation quality discrimination by continuous and pulse ESR techniques

2008

The biological damages produced by ionizing radiations in tissues and cells depend on the radiation quality, besides on the dose. The discrimination of the radiation quality, which is related to the linear energy transfer (LET), interests various fields such as radiobiology, astronautic space research, radiotherapy research and accidental dosimetry. In this work we have applied continuous wave ESR (cw-ESR) and pulse ESR techniques to ammonium tartrate samples with the aim of developing procedures able to discriminate radiation quality whose knowledge is fundamental for rabiobiological considerations. We have chosen the ammonium tartrate because it is a promising compound for the measurement…

Radiation controlled energy of photoelectrons produced by two-color short pulses.

2008

We report on numerical results of energy spectra of photoelectrons emitted by irradiating a hydrogen atom with the superposition of two pulses. The spectra have been obtained by numerical integration of the time dependent Schr¨odinger equation. The highest frequency component of the pulse has been assumed to have low intensity and such a frequency that a single photon may ionize the atom. Its duration has been assumed to lie in the range of subfemtoseconds. The lowest frequency component that redistribute the energy of the ionized electrons has an higher intensity and duration of few femtoseconds. We find that when the field are aligned, the electron energy spectra strongly depend on the ti…

Study of Two BeppoSAX Observations of GX 340+0

2006

We present the results of two BeppoSAX broad band (0.1–200 keV) observations of the Z-source GX 340+0 comparing our results to those of a previous observation of the source. From the color–color diagram we selected three zones and extracted the source energy spectrum from each zone. We find that the model, composed by a blackbody plus a Comptonized component, absorbed by an equivalent hydrogen column of ~6 × 10 22 cm −2 , well fits the spectra in the energy range below 30 keV. At higher energies a power law component with photon index of 2.5 is observed. The associated flux decreases going from the horizontal branch to the flaring branch of the Z-track.

Determination of ion-induced K-shell ionization cross sections by comparison with nuclear Coulomb excitation

1979

Abstract A new method for the determination of cross sections for K-shell ionization of heavy atoms by charged particles is proposed. The method is based on a comparison of photon lines due to K X-rays and low-energy γ-rays, the latter ones being produced in nuclear Coulomb excitation with accurately known cross sections. This procedure applies within a limited energy range to the study of targets comprising deformed even nuclei, but can also be extended to other targets having Z≳30. A test of the new technique has been carried out for Gd, W, Th and U natural targets irradiated by 4.75 MeV protons. For Th, also energies of 6.80–10.10 MeV were used. The results are briefly discussed with ref…

Neutral pion and η meson production at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV

2018

Neutral pion and η meson production in the transverse momentum range 1 <pT< 20 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in central and semicentral Pb-Pb collisions at sNN  = 2.76 TeV. These results were obtained using the photon conversion method as well as the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS) and Electromagnetic Calorimeter detectors. The results extend the upper pT reach of the previous ALICE π0 measurements from 12 to 20 GeV/c and present the first measurement of η meson production in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. The η/π0 ratio is similar for the two centralities and reaches at high pT a plateau value of 0.457 ± 0.013stat ± 0.018sys…
