Combining hectometric and decametric satellite observations to provide near real time decametric FAPAR product
2017
Abstract A wide range of ecological, agricultural, hydrological and meteorological applications at local to regional scales requires decametric biophysical data. However, before the launch of SENTINEL-2A, only few decametric products are produced and most of them remain limited by the small number of available observations, mostly due to a moderate revisit frequency combined with cloud occurrence. Conversely, kilometric and hectometric biophysical products are now widely available with almost complete and continuous coverage, but the associated spatial resolution limits the application over heterogeneous landscapes. The objective of this study is to combine unfrequent decametric spatial res…
Potential construction of the B (1) 1 Π state in KCs based on Fourier-Transform spectroscopy data
2015
Abstract The paper presents an empirical pointwise potential energy curve (PEC) of the extensively perturbed B ( 1 ) 1 Π state of the KCs molecule constructed by applying an Inverted Perturbation Approach routine. The experimental term values in the energy range E ( v ′ , J ′ ) ∈ [ 14071 ; 15502 ] cm − 1 involved in the fit were based on Fourier-Transform spectroscopy data obtained with 0.01 cm−1 accuracy from laser-induced B ( 1 ) 1 Π → X 1 Σ + fluorescence spectra in the present work (654 term values) combined with 520 term values from Birzniece et al. (2012) . The data set included vibrational v ′ ∈ [ 0 , 35 ] and rotational J ′ ∈ [ 7 , 233 ] quantum numbers covering about 85% of the pot…
Efficiency of the microwave-assisted extraction of hydrocarbons and pesticides from sediments
1997
Abstract A mixture of toluene and water is proposed for the microwave-assisted extraction of organic pollutants, hydrocarbons and pesticides, from marine sediments. The effect of experimental conditions, such as microwave power and irradiation time, on the extraction of linear, unresolved and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as well as PCBs and DDTs has been evaluated using real marine sediment samples. Values found by Soxhlet and ultrasonic extraction were employed to evaluate the efficiency of the microwave-assisted extraction. Analytical determinations were carried out by gas chromatography using FID, ECD and MS detectors. For 2 g of a dry sediment, an extraction time of 6 min with 10 ml…
Laboratory Studies of Scattering Properties of Polluted Cloud Droplets: Implications for FSSP Measurements
2008
Abstract Laboratory experiments were conducted in the Mainz vertical wind tunnel to study the effects of pollutants dissolved or suspended in cloud droplets on the droplet size measurements of a Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP). The FSSP is a widely used instrument to derive microphysical properties of atmospheric clouds. Individual droplets of different well-defined sizes were freely falling at their terminal velocities in the wind tunnel while the intensity of radiation emitted by the He–Ne laser of the FSSP and scattered by the droplets was measured. For this purpose, the FSSP was adapted and mounted to the wind tunnel. The intensity of radiation scattered by the droplets in …
Effect of Core-Crosslinking on Protein Corona Formation on Polymeric Micelles.
2021
Most nanomaterials acquire a protein corona upon contact with biological fluids. The magnitude of this effect is strongly dependent both on surface and structure of the nanoparticle. To define the contribution of the internal nanoparticle structure, protein corona formation of block copolymer micelles with poly(N-2-hydroxypropylmethacrylamide) (pHPMA) as hydrophilic shell, which are crosslinked-or not-in the hydrophobic core is comparatively analyzed. Both types of micelles are incubated with human blood plasma and separated by asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4). Their size is determined by dynamic light scattering and proteins within the micellar fraction are characterized by…

A commercial low density polyethylene was irradiated by gamma irradiation at room temperature with different integrated doses and dose rates. The modifications induced in the material were studied by means of solubility and swelling measurements and related to structural modifications by calorimetric measurements. Results indicate that crosslinking prevails with respect to degradation at high dose rates and that the ageing phenomena occur essentially in the amorphous phase.
Pulsatile protein release and protection using radiation-crosslinked polypeptide hydrogel delivery devices
2011
Abstract In the recent years recombinant technology has identified numerous protein based therapeutics. Their effective delivery, though, can be challenging due to the poor stability of most proteins along their pathway to the target site in the body. Hydrogels have been identified as good candidates for protein encapsulation and delivery thanks to both material and manufacturing process advantages. In this work we propose high energy irradiation as a synthetic methodology of choice to engineer hydrogel-based delivery devices for encapsulation and pulsatile release of proteins, triggered by pH, and for prevention of their denaturation when encapsulated. In particular, maleic anhydride funct…
Concentration dependence of the electro-optical spectra from two-dimensional aggregated chromophore systems
1991
The linear and the quadratic Stark effects have been employed to characterize aggregate formation of an amphiphilic cyanine dye mixed with arachidic acid in various concentrations within Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers. Two different electrode configurations with the electric field directions parallel and normal to the films have been employed to test the responses of the electronic spectra to external fields. The observations have been used to quantify the induced and static dipole moment changes on excitation of the chromophores. A comparison of the results obtained from different multilayer arrangements is suggestive of inter-layer couplings for the case of head-to-head configurations of t…
Minimalism in radiation synthesis of biomedical functional nanogels.
2012
A scalable, single-step, synthetic approach for the manufacture of biocompatible, functionalized micro- and nanogels is presented. In particular, poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone)-grafted-(aminopropyl)methacrylamide microgels and nanogels were generated through e-beam irradiation of PVP aqueous solutions in the presence of a primary amino-group-carrying monomer. Particles with different hydrodynamic diameters and surface charge densities were obtained at the variance of the irradiation conditions. Chemical structure was investigated by different spectroscopic techniques. Fluorescent variants were generated through fluorescein isothiocyanate attachment to the primary amino groups grafted to PVP, to …
Relationship between UVB and broadband solar radiation in Spain
2014
The daily values of UVB irradiation (290–315 nm), IUVB, and the broadband total irradiation (300–2800 nm), IT, measured on a horizontal plane have been correlated for the period 2000–2008 at 16 measurement sites in Spain. The results have been compared with the daily experimental values registered at the same sites during the period 2009–2011. The coefficients of determination R2 obtained by applying a linear regression are higher than 0.88 for all sites and increase to 0.94 when using a quadratic regression. When all data are considered together, the values of R2 are 0.91 and 0.97 for the linear and quadratic regressions, respectively. Three different clearness indices, which are dimension…
