In-line monitoring of the photooxidation behaviour of a PP/clay nanocomposite through creep measurements

Abstract The photooxidation behaviour of a polypropylene/organomodified clay nanocomposite sample has been monitored by means of a new apparatus through the record of the creep curves measured while the sample is subjected to the contemporary action of temperature, tensile strength and UV radiation. The creep curves of the irradiated samples are higher than those of the non-irradiated samples and the curves diverge when the molecular weight begins to decrease because of the degradation. Inverse response of polypropylene to gamma radiation under vacuum

Abstract The effect of gamma radiation under vacuum on polypropylene is analysed on the basis of a simple kinetic model. The influence of the irradiation parameters, total absorbed dose and dose rate, on the rates of the main reactions occurring during irradiation, i.e. β-scission, addition to double bonds and termination, is studied. Using kinetic equations, and free radical and double bond balance relationships, we show that it is possible to rationalize the response of polypropylene to gamma radiation. Validity of NMR pore-size analysis of cultutal heritage ancient building materials containing magnetic impurities

NMR relaxation time distributions, obtained with laboratory and portable devices, are utilized to characterize the pore-size distributions of building materials coming from the Roman remains of the Greek-Roman Theatre of Taormina. To validate the interpretation of relaxation data in terms of pore-size distribution, comparison of results from standard and in situ NMR experiments with results of the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) has been made. Polystyrene Sulfonate–Porphyrin Assemblies: Influence of Polyelectrolyte and Porphyrin Structure

In this study, electrostatic self-assembly of different polystyrene sulfonates and a set of tetravalent cationic porphyrins is investigated. It is shown that association of linear polystyrene sulfonates of different molar masses yields finite size nanoscale assemblies that are stable in aqueous solution. Aggregates are compared to the ones of cylindrical brushes, revealing that both form assemblies in the 100 nm range with the charge ratio (molar ratio of porphyrin charges to polyelectrolyte charges) being determining, while the morphology of the resulting network-like assemblies is different for both polyelectrolyte architectures. The positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located 40km off the coast of Toulon in the Mediterranean Sea at a mooring depth of about 2475m, consists of twelve detection lines equipped typically with 25 storeys. Every storey carries three optical modules that detect Cherenkov light induced by charged secondary particles (typically muons) coming from neutrino interactions. As these lines are flexible structures fixed to the sea bed and held taut by a buoy, sea currents cause the lines to move and the storeys to rotate. Vacancies and Carbon Impurities in Iron

Point defects in electron-irradiated high-purity α-iron have been studied by positron lifetime measurements. We show that the migration stage of monovacancies occurs already as low as at 220 K, which results in agglomeration of small three-dimensional vacancy clusters. Furthermore, we irradiated carbon-doped iron specimens, where formation of highly asymmetric monovacancycarbon atom pairs was detected during the migration stage of monovacancies at 220 K.

Characterization of non-polar ZnO layers with positron annihilation spectroscopy

We applied positron annihilation spectroscopy to study the effect of growth polarity on the vacancy defects in ZnO grown by metal-organic vapor phase deposition on sapphire. Both c-plane and a-plane ZnO layers were measured, and Zn vacancies were identified as the dominant defects detected by positrons. The results are qualitatively similar to those of earlier experiments in GaN. The Zn vacancy concentration decreases in c-plane ZnO by almost one order of magnitude (from high 10 cm−3 to low 10 cm−3) when the layer thickness is increased from 0.5 to 2 μm. Interestingly, in a-plane ZnO the Zn vacancy concentration is constant at a level of about 2×10 cm−3 in all the samples with thicknesses v…
