The structural modifications induced in samples of isotactic poly(propylene) obtained by quenching from the melt at 100°C/s and subsequently annealed at 40, 60 and 80°C for different annealing times have been studied using simultaneous wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering at the synchrotron radiation source of DESY. The occurrance of two different long-period values is demonstrated. These values are related to the mesomorphic phase, existing in the starting quenched material, and to the α-monoclinic one, which settles during the annealing process, respectively.

Mesoscopic gels at low agarose concentration: perturbation effects of ethanol

Aqueous agarose solutions at low concentrations (0.5 g/liter) were temperature quenched below the spinodal line to form mutually disconnected mesoscopic gels. In the presence of 6% ethanol, these solutions, obtained by quenching at the same temperature depth as in pure water, appear much more fluid, as determined by probe diffusion experiments. We show by static and dynamic light scattering that this can be explained by the solvent-mediated effects of ethanol, leading to a globular shape of mesoscopic agarose gels, rather than to an extended rodlike structure observed in pure water. Photoluminescence in gamma-irradiated alpha-quartz investigated by synchrotron radiation

Abstract We report an experimental investigation of the photoluminescence, under excitation by synchrotron radiation within the absorption band at 7.6 eV , induced in γ-irradiated α-quartz. Two emissions centered at 4.9 and 2.7 eV are observed at low temperature: the former decreases above 40 K , whereas the second band exhibits an initial slight increase and its quenching is effective above 100 K . Furthermore, the decay kinetics of both emissions occur in a time scale of nanoseconds: at T=17.5 K we measured a lifetime τ∼1.0 ns for the photoluminescence at 4.9 eV and τ∼3.6 ns for that at 2.7 eV . First-principles study of the amorphous In3SbTe2phase change compound

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory were performed to generate amorphous models of the phase change compound In${}_{3}$SbTe${}_{2}$ by quenching from the melt. In-Sb and In-Te are the most abundant bonds with only a minor fraction of Sb-Te bonds. The bonding geometry in the amorphous phase is, however, strongly dependent on the density in the range 6.448--5.75 g/cm${}^{3}$ that we investigated. While at high density the bonding geometry of In atoms is mostly octahedral-like as in the cubic crystalline phase of the ternary compound In${}_{3}$SbTe${}_{2}$, at low density we observed a sizable fraction of tetrahedral-like geometries similar to those pres…

Modeling the interactions between light and crystallizing polymer during fast cooling

In this work, an experimental set-up able to quench thin polymer films whilst recording the sample thermal history as well as the overall and depolarized light intensities of a laser beam emerging from the sample is described. The interactions between the light beam and the crystallizing material have been modeled accounting for absorption and scattering phenomena. The proposed model was found to be able to reproduce the ex- perimentally observed behavior of light intensities and it was validated by comparison with conventional DSC analysis. Quantum control and long-range quantum correlations in dynamical Casimir arrays

The recent observation of the dynamical Casimir effect in a modulated superconducting waveguide, coronating thirty years of world-wide research, empowered the quantum technology community with a powerful tool to create entangled photons on-chip. In this work we show how, going beyond the single waveguide paradigm using a scalable array, it is possible to create multipartite nonclassical states, with the possibility to control the long-range quantum correlations of the emitted photons. In particular, our finite-temperature theory shows how maximally entangled $NOON$ states can be engineered in a realistic setup. Displacement Defect Formation in Complex Oxide Crystals under Irradiation

The work is devoted to an analysis of formation processes of the radiation displacement defects (RDDs) and colour centres (CCs) in complex oxide crystals under irradiation. The calculation results on: the displacement process simulation as well as an analysis of the RDD and CC accumulation kinetics are presented. New experimental results on additional absorption spectra induced by neutron irradiation of LiNbO(3) (LNO) crystals doped with Fe and Cr and YAlO(3) (YAP) crystals doped with Nd and Er as well are presented. Generation of narrowband antisymmetric lamb waves using a formed laser source in the ablative regime

A formed laser source, using a four-element lenticular array, is used in the ablative regime to generate select, narrowband, acoustic plate waves. The arrangement of the array produces acoustical signals that have frequencies compatible with the response of the broadband capacitive air-coupled transducer used in this study. A simplified concept is presented to explain the effect of a line array source on the frequency content of acoustic waves. A simple algorithm to estimate evapotranspiration from DAIS data: Application to the DAISEX campaigns
