Bipolar electrolysis for tritium recovery from weakly active tritiated water

Abstract Detritiation facilities produce low activity tritiated water from which tritium cannot be recovered. Bipolar electrolysis, based on the electrochemical permeation of hydrogen and its isotopes through Pd–Ag alloy membranes, allows tritiated water enrichment together with negligible gaseous tritium release. Our purpose is to enrich water from 500 Ci/l (1.85×1013 Bq/l) to more than 2000 Ci/l (7.40×1013 Bq/l). We first describe the principle of bipolar electrolysis and its application to isotopic enrichment. Preliminary application of thermoluminescence and single aliquot regeneration method for dose reconstruction in soda lime glass

The research described in this paper shows that the use of the single aliquot regeneration (SAR) method for thermoluminescence (TL) measurements applied to soda lime glasses allows to carry out a retrospective dose evaluation. We have followed a fast and efficient sample preparation procedure which permits measurements without powdering and sieving processes. We have analyzed the TL signal of commercial soda lime watch glass irradiated with 6 Mega Volts (MV) LINAC photons, 10 MeV LINAC electrons and 62 MeV protons. Evaluation of the original dose in irradiated dried fruit by EPR spectroscopy

Abstract The electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) is one of the physical methods, recommended by the European Committee for Standardization, for the identification of irradiated food containing cellulose, such as dried fruit. In this work the applicability of EPR as identification method of irradiated pistachios, hazelnuts, peanuts, chestnuts, pumpkin seeds is evaluated; the time stability of the radiation induced signal is studied and the single aliquot additive dose method is used to evaluate the dose in the product.

Measurements of isomeric yield ratios of fission products from proton-induced fission on natU and 232Th via direct ion counting

Independent isomeric yield ratios (IYR) of 81Ge, 96Y, 97Y, 97Nb, 128Sn and 130Sn have been determined in the 25 MeV proton-induced fission of natU and 232Th. The measurements were performed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility at the University of Jyväskylä. A direct ion counting measurement of the isomeric fission yield ratios was accomplished for the first time, registering the fission products in less than a second after their production. In addition, the IYRs of natU were measured by means of γ-spectroscopy in order to verify the consistency of the recently upgraded experimental setup. Studies of short-lived fission products by means of the multistage solvent extraction system SISAK

The multistage solvent extraction system SISAK is described. The system is used for online studies of nuclides with half-lives down to ∼1 s. Some of the chemical separation procedures are presented, and a survey is given on the results obtained so far. The possiblity to gain access to nuclides with even shorter half-lives is also discussed.

Performance of the on-line isotope separation facility HELIOS at the Mainz reactor

Abstract The helium-jet on-line isotope eparation facility HELIOS is in operation at the Mainz reactor for spectroscopic studies on mass separated neutron-rich nuclides far from the line of beta-stability. The basic features and achievements of the facility are reported. A total of 45 isotopes of the elements Rb, Sr, Y, Sn, Sb, Te, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr and Nd have been separated and identified so far. Overall efficiencies up to 2% have been obtained using the integrated skimmer ion source arrangement either in a hollow cathode or in a high temperature surface ionization mode. The delay time for the HELIOS system was determined to be about 1 s.

Rapid chemical separation procedures

1976

Fast, discontinuous separation procedures are described for zirconium, niobium, technetium and antimony from fission products. Other rapid separation methods from aqueous solutions are summarized. The combination of a gas jet recoil transport system with a continuous solvent extraction technique and with a thermochromatographic separation method is presented. The application of such procedures to the investigation of new and already known short-lived nuclides is illustrated by some examples.

This thesis project, which is part of a collaboration between the Institut de Chimie Moléculaire de l’Université de Bourgogne and the Positron Emission Tomography Research Centre, is about the synthesis of fluoride pincers derived from amino acids based on 18F-B bond construction to get a new class of PET imaging agents. First, this project concerned the design, synthesis and characterisation of new boronato and trifluoroborato phosphonium amino acid salts. Quaternisation of o-boronate phenyl phosphine with β-iodo amino esters or γ-iodo amino ester leads to the corresponding salts without racemisation and in yields up to 88%.
