Manipulating antiferromagnets with magnetic fields: Ratchet motion of multiple domain walls induced by asymmetric field pulses

2016

Future applications of antiferromagnets (AFs) in many spintronics devices rely on the precise manipulation of domain walls. The conventional approach using static magnetic fields is inefficient due to the low susceptibility of AFs. Recently proposed electrical manipulation with spin-orbit torques is restricted to metals with a specific crystal structure. Here we propose an alternative, broadly applicable approach: using asymmetric magnetic field pulses to induce controlled ratchet motion of AF domain walls. The efficiency of this approach is based on three peculiarities of AF dynamics. First, a time-dependent magnetic field couples with an AF order parameter stronger than a static magnetic …

Active Brownian Motion Models and Applications to Ratchets

2008

We give an overview over recent studies on the model of Active Brownian Motion (ABM) coupled to reservoirs providing free energy which may be converted into kinetic energy of motion. First, we present an introduction to a general concept of active Brownian particles which are capable to take up energy from the source and transform part of it in order to perform various activities. In the second part of our presentation we consider applications of ABM to ratchet systems with different forms of differentiable potentials. Both analytical and numerical evaluations are discussed for three cases of sinusoidal, staircase-like and Mateos ratchet potentials, also with the additional loads modeled by…

Characteristics of the polymer transport in ratchet systems

2010

Molecules with complex internal structure in time-dependent periodic potentials are studied by using short Rubinstein-Duke model polymers as an example. We extend our earlier work on transport in stochastically varying potentials to cover also deterministic potential switching mechanisms, energetic efficiency and non-uniform charge distributions. We also use currents in the non-equilibrium steady state to identify the dominating mechanisms that lead to polymer transportation and analyze the evolution of the macroscopic state (e.g., total and head-to-head lengths) of the polymers. Several numerical methods are used to solve the master equations and nonlinear optimization problems. The domina…

Shakedown of elastic—plastic solids with frictionless unilateral contact boundary conditions

1997

Abstract Elastic perfectly plastic solids (or structures) in frictionless unilateral contact with a rigid obstacle and subjected to quasi-statically variable loads within a given domain are considered. In the hypothesis that the structure undergoes small displacements and complies with a d -stability requisite herein introduced, a Melantype shakedown theorem is presented. This theorem is conceptually similar to the classical one; namely, it requires that the unilateral-contact elastic stress response to the loads and to some initial plastic strains be plastically admissible everywhere in the body and for all load conditions. A method for evaluating the shakedown load boundary is also discus…

Intertextuality as a source of humour in Terry Pratchett's novels

2016

The character name translations in the Finnish translation of Terry Pratchett’s Lords and Ladies

2009

Tämän proseminaarityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia minkälaisia käännösratkaisuja on hyödynnetty suomennettaessa henkilönimiä Terry Pratchettin kirjassa Lords and Ladies (suomeksi Herraskaista väkeä).

Net currents obtained from zero-average potentials in single amphoteric nanopores

2013

We have studied experimentally and theoretically the rectifying properties of a single asymmetric nanopore functionalized with amphoteric lysine groups and characterized the net current obtained with zero-average time dependent potentials. The pH-controlled rectification phenomena may be relevant to bio-electrochemistry, pH sensing and regulation, and energy conversion. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
