Biopreservation by sugar and/or polymeric matrixes is a thoroughly studied research topic with wide technological relevance. Ternary amorphous systems containing both saccharides and proteins are extensively exploited to model the in vivo biopreservation process. Polar solar panels: Arctic and Antarctic microbiomes display similar taxonomic profiles

2018

Solar panels located on high (Arctic and Antarctic) latitudes combine the harshness of the climate with that of the solar exposure. We report here that these polar solar panels are inhabited by similar microbial communities in taxonomic terms, dominated by Hymenobacter spp., Sphingomonas spp. and Ascomycota. Our results suggest that solar panels, even on high latitudes, can shape a microbial ecosystem adapted to irradiation and desiccation.

A novel GABRB3 variant in Dravet syndrome: Case report and literature review

Abstract Background Mutations in GABRB3 have been identified in subjects with different types of epilepsy and epileptic syndromes, including West syndrome (WS), Dravet syndrome (DS), Lennox‐Gastaut syndrome (LGS), myoclonic‐atonic epilepsy (MAE), and others. Methods and results We herewith report on a girl affected by DS, who has been followed from infancy to the current age of 18 years. TSH/IGF-1 Receptor Cross-Talk Rapidly Activates Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinases in Multiple Cell Types

We previously showed that thyrotropin (TSH)/insulinlike growth factor (IGF)-1 receptor cross-talk appears to be involved in Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) pathogenesis and upregulation of thyroid-specific genes in human thyrocytes. In orbital fibroblasts from GO patients, coadministration of TSH and IGF-1 induces synergistic increases in hyaluronan secretion. In human thyrocytes, TSH plus IGF-1 synergistically increased expression of the sodium-iodide symporter that appeared to involve ERK1/2 activation. Expert opinion on the metabolic complications of mTOR inhibitors

Abstract Using mTOR inhibitors (mTORi) as anticancer drugs led to hyperglycemia (12–50%) and hyperlipidemia (7–73%) in phase-III trials. These high rates require adapted treatment in cancer patients. Before initiating mTORi treatment, lipid profile screening should be systematic, with fasting glucose assay in non-diabetic patients and HbA1C in diabetic patients. After initiation, lipid profile monitoring should be systematic, with fasting glucose assay in non-diabetic patients, every 2 weeks for the first month and then monthly. AbstractContext:The TSH receptor (TSHR) is considered the main target of stimulatory autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO); however, it has been suggested that stimulatory IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) autoantibodies also play a role.Objective:We previously demonstrated that a monoclonal stimulatory TSHR antibody, M22, activates TSHR/IGF-1R cross talk in orbital fibroblasts/preadipocytes obtained from patients with GO (GO fibroblasts [GOFs]).
