Cellular Immunity and Retrobulbar Fibroblasts in Graves' Ophthalmopathy

1994

In Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO), retrobulbar connective tissue is infiltrated by T cells whose role in the pathogenesis of the disease was investigated in the present work. The aims included firstly to characterize subsets of blood lymphocytes and of sessile lymphocytes cloned from a retroorbital tissue specimen. Second, in counterstimulation assays, the ability of patients' T cells to influence cultivated retrobulbar fibroblasts and in turn the enhancement of lymphocyte proliferation by retrobulbar fibroblasts was investigated. Blood lymphocytes of 16 GO patients and 12 controls isolated by density gradient centrifugation and retrobulbar fibroblasts obtained from orbital decompression were …

Eosinophilic Meningitis due toAngiostrongylus cantonensisin Germany

2009

We report a case of eosinophilic meningitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis in a patient who returned from Thailand. The presence of a compatible epidemiologic history and eosinophilia in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lead to the diagnosis, which was confirmed by detection of specific antibodies. After treatment with albendazole and corticosteroids he recovered completely.

Local reactions to tick bites

2008

A retrospective histological and immunohistochemical study has been carried out in 25 cases of tick bites recorded in our Departments. The samples that included an attached tick showed a cement cone anchoring the mouthparts to the skin and a blood-soaked, spongiform appearance of the superficial dermis, with a mild neutrophilic and eosinophilic infiltration. The vessels displayed a loose multilayered endothelial proliferation, with plump endothelia, permeated with erythrocytes. A few of them were severed, allowing copious blood extravasation. The established lesions included the following: erythema chronicum migrans-like cases, foreign body granulomas-sometimes containing remnants of the mo…

Tuberculoid leprosy and Type 1 lepra reaction.

2008

Summary A patient is described with tuberculoid leprosy and Type 1 (lepra) reaction from Sicily a non-endemic region, who lived previously in Manila from 2000 to 2005. The skin lesions became acutely inflamed and edematous. The plaques were painless to touch or pinprick, and there was swelling of the nerves in the fibro-osseous tunnels under the surface of the skin, including both the ulnar nerve at the elbow, and the posterior tibial nerve (medial malleolus). During the course of electro-neurographic studies, conduction velocity in the motory nerves indicated a slowing-down. The diagnosis of leprosy was confirmed by residence in an endemic area for about 5 years, by simultaneous skin lesio…

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia: report of 4 cases with immunohistochemical findings.

2008

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a benign endothelial proliferation, usually intravascular, that may mimic angiosarcoma. In this report, four new cases of IPEH involving the oral region are described. The affected sites were the lower lip, labial comissure and the submandibular region. After clinical evaluation, the complete removal of the lesions showed a circumscribed and soft mass. Histologically, the major feature was a reactive proliferation of endothelial cells composed of small papillary structures with hypocellular and hyalinized cores arising in an organized thrombus. Immunohistochemical staining for CD34 was strongly positive in endothelial cells. Vimentin…

A Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of the Mediastinum With Immature T Cells and Association With Myasthenia Gravis

2010

Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma is a very rare neoplasm showing morphologic and phenotypic features of FDCs. It occurs primarily in lymph nodes but also in extranodal sites. So far, there have been no reports on FDC sarcoma associated with myasthenia gravis. In the following we will present a case of an FDC tumor of the mediastinum associated with paraneoplastic myasthenia gravis in a 39-year-old man. The tumor contained a major proportion of immature T cells, which may be connected to this patient's very unusual clinical presentation with autoimmune phenomena. Extranodal FDC sarcomas still seem hardly noticed, and their clinical and pathologic characteristics remain to be better de…

Functional gastrointestinal disorders among soldiers in peacetime versus out-of-area missions.

2001

Functional gastrointestinal syndromes are chronic disorders of the abdomen with an absence of organic findings. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency and symptomatology of functional abdominal syndromes in soldiers during an out-of-area mission versus during peacetime at home. We examined 124 soldiers who sought medical care for abdominal symptoms at the German Field Hospital Trogir, Croatia. The control group consisted of 113 soldiers who were referred with abdominal symptoms to the Central Hospital of German Armed Forces Koblenz, Germany. After excluding an organic disease, the diagnosis of a functional disorder was made. Fourteen percent of the Implementation Force soldiers …

Public Health Relevance of Graves' Orbitopathy

2012

Disfiguring proptosis and functional impairment in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO) may lead to impaired earning capacity and to considerable indirect/direct costs. The aim of the study was to investigate the public health relevance of GO.This cross-sectional study was performed between 2005 and 2009 at a multidisciplinary university orbital center.A total of 310 unselected patients with GO of various degrees of severity and activity participated in the study. We conducted an observational study. We measured work disability and sick leave as well as the resulting indirect/direct costs of GO-specific therapies.Of 215 employed patients, 47 (21.9%) were temporarily work disabled, and 12 (5.…

PREGO (presentation of Graves' orbitopathy) study: changes in referral patterns to European Group On Graves' Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) centres over the pe…

2015

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The epidemiology of Graves' orbitopathy (GO) may be changing. The aim of the study was to identify trends in presentation of GO to tertiary centres and initial management over time.METHODS: Prospective observational study of European Group On Graves' Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) centres. All new referrals with a diagnosis of GO over a 4-month period in 2012 were included. Clinical and demographic characteristics, referral timelines and initial decisions about management were recorded. The data were compared with a similar EUGOGO survey performed in 2000.RESULTS: The demographic characteristics of 269 patients studied in 2012 were similar to those collected in the year 2000, includi…
