Effects of preemptive analgesia with intravenous acetaminophen on postoperative pain relief in patients undergoing third molar surgery: a prospective…
2020
Background The efficacy of preemptive analgesia in managing postoperative pain remains controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen administered before or immediately after the surgical extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar. Material and Methods This prospective randomized clinical trial included 120 patients. The patients were assigned to one of three groups: the preoperative-treatment group (pre-group), which received 1000 mg of IV acetaminophen 20 min before surgery; the postoperative-treatment group (post-group), which received 1000 mg of IV acetaminophen after surgery; the no-treatment group (control-group), which did not…
Determination of ascorbic acid in plasma and urine by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection.
1999
Abstract A reliable simple reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method for the routine determination of ascorbic acid in plasma and urine with ultraviolet detection is described. This method enables the complete separation of the ascorbic acid peak from others with a recovery of above 95 % within 8 minutes. The method can be used for analysing multiple samples within a day. In addition, the storage conditions and stability of ascorbic acid in plasma and urine were investigated. Samples of plasma and urine can be stored on ice in darkness for at least 60 min without reduction of ascorbic acid concentration. Prepared samples can be stored in darkness at 4 °C for at least 120 min and in liqui…

In situ Volcano Monitoring: Present and Future
2015
During the last couple of decades, volcanology has evolved significantly, allowing for an improved understanding of volcanic processes preceding, accompanying and following eruptive events. Key elements to these achievements are the huge amounts of high quality data being collected by networks of increasingly sensitive instruments deployed at active volcanoes. The diffusion of continuous, precise measurements of: (1) wide-band ground displacement; (2) flux and chemistry of volatile emissions; and (3) the spatio-temporal variations of potential fields (e.g., gravity) now permit imaging the mechanism that controls mass transfer underneath volcanoes to an unprecedented level of detail. Joined …
Retention pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameter relationships of antihistamine drugs using biopartitioning micellar chromatography
2001
Abstract Antihistamines are drugs which act by competitive inhibition of the H1 or H2 histamine receptors. Little has been known about their clinical pharmacokinetics and biological responses until the last few years. In this paper, we propose quantitative retention–activity relationship, QRAR, models based on the retention data of antihistamines in a biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) system using a Brij35 mobile phase for describing pharmacokinetic parameters such as half-life and volume of distribution, or the pharmacodynamic parameters, therapeutic plasma levels, lethal doses and drug-receptor dissociation constant. The predictive ability of these models is statistically vali…
Littera scripta manet. The Historical Collection of the Library of the University of Latvia
2019
The report for 3 Baltic University Library Meeting (15-16 May, 2019) that was held at the University of Tartu Library. Report describes the experience of preparing exhibitions about Historical Collections of the Library of the University of Latvia. There are given two examples, that illustrates the challenges library have faced regarding the process of creating exhibitions.
Constraining the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections with XENON1T
2019
We report the first experimental results on spin-dependent elastic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering from the XENON1T dark matter search experiment. The analysis uses the full ton year exposure of XENON1T to constrain the spin-dependent proton-only and neutron-only cases. No significant signal excess is observed, and a profile likelihood ratio analysis is used to set exclusion limits on the WIMP-nucleon interactions. This includes the most stringent constraint to date on the WIMP-neutron cross section, with a minimum of 6.3 × 10−42 cm2 at 30 GeV/c2 and 90% confidence level. The results are compared with those from collider searches and used to exclude new paramet…
Slow pyrolysis of an LDPE/PP mixture: Kinetics and process performance
2021
Abstract High- and low-density polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) are the most common polymers among plastic waste as they have multiple commercial applications. This study focused on thermal degradation characteristics and kinetic of a plastic mixture with a composition of 92.5 wt% LDPE and 7.5% PP. Thermal decomposition characteristics of the plastic mixture was analysed through thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The overall kinetic of the process was studied using the modified Coats−Redfern method and the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW) method. The apparent activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A) obtained were 316.0 kJ/mol; 8.09E+21 min−1 and 311.5 kJ/mol; 4.35E+21 m…
