Adsorption of gaseous p-xylene and m-xylene on NaY, KY, and BaY zeolites: Part 1. Adsorption equilibria of pure xylenes

Abstract Isothermal and isobaric adsorptions of p -xylene and m -xylene on NaY, KY, and BaY are studied by thermogravimetry between 25°C and 400°C, and 10 Pa and 1014 Pa. At low filling BaY shows a stronger affinity for xylenes than the other zeolites. At high temperature and low pressure its adsorption capacity is greater than those of NaY and KY. These two zeolites have a similar behavior and adsorb more m -xylene than p -xylene. At low temperature and high pressure KY adsorbs p -xylene like NaY and m -xylene like BaY, and, unlike NaY, the adsorption capacities of KY and BaY are higher for p -xylene than for m -xylene. A new high-performance size-exclusion chromatographic strategy is reported for the analysis of the hydrophobic self-associating peptide gramicidin A, incorporated into artificial phospholipid vesicles (liposomes). The method is based on the direct injection of a few microlitres of the gramicidin A-containing liposome suspension into the column, which is eluted with a non-polar solvent, such as tetrahydrofuran. The type and amount of information which can be derived from this methodology have been evaluated. Synthesis and thermal behavior of Janus dendrimers, part 2

Abstract The thermal properties of twelve Janus-type dendrimers up to the second generation were evaluated by termogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compounds consist of the dendritic bisMPA based polyester moieties, and either 3,4-bis-dodecyloxybenzoic acid, 3,5-bis-dodecyloxybenzoic acid or 3,4,5-tris-dodecyloxybenzoic acid moieties, attached to opposite sides of the pentaerythritol core. Polyethylene glycol/clay nanotubes composites

Nanocomposites of poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG) 20000 filled with clay nanotubes (HNTs) were prepared. The thermal properties obtained from thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry were correlated to the morphology imaged by scanning electron microscopy. Low amounts of HNTs generate compact structure while large amounts of HNTs create craters and voids. The decrease of polymer degradation temperature in the presence of large amount of nanoclay (ca. 80 wt%) is a consequence of the morphology at the mesoscale range. <title>Effect of light exposure on dislocation mobility in fullerite C60 crystals</title>

The illumination-time evolution and the wavelength dependence of the photoinduced changes in dislocation mobility on the (111) face of C60 single crystals in air for the wavelength range 150 - 900 nm and power densities 0.2 - 2 mW/cm2 has been investigated. The results show that the light exposure in air leads to the decrease of the dislocation mobility. The magnitude of the effect as a function of the illumination time was investigated and a two-stage relationship was obtained. The ultraviolet light was found to be more effective than the visible light in the photoinduced reduction of dislocation mobility and solubility. Sorption of n-hexane in amorphous polystyrene

Sorption properties of pure n-hexane vapor in amorphous polystyrene (PS) were studied at 298 K by thermogravimetry under controlled vapor pressure. Two sorption-desorption cycles were performed by varying the relative pressure between 0 and 0.91. Mixing of PS with n-hexane resulted in a strong plasticization, which was evidenced by quite significant depression in the glass transition temperature of the polymer as shown by differential scanning calorimetry. Maximum quantity of n-hexane sorbed in the PS at 298 K and at a pressure close to saturation was about 12.4 wt %. Heterocyclic rearrangements in constrained media. A zeolite-directed photorearrangement of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles

[reaction: see text] The first intrazeolite-photoinduced rearrangement of a five-membered heterocycle is reported. A completely different behavior compared to solution irradiations has been observed. The zeolite's role in directing the photoreaction of 3-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles toward the formation of the corresponding 1,3,4-oxadiazoles in a ring contraction-ringexpansion route is discussed.

Functionalized halloysite multivalent glycocluster as a new drug delivery system.

A new design for halloysite nanotube materials was obtained by grafting chemically modified cyclodextrin units onto the nanotube surface. In particular, grafted cyclodextrins were decorated with thiosaccharide pendants, in order to mimic the well-known binding of sugars to proteins and the glyco-cluster effect occurring during cellular recognition events. Determining the selective impregnation of waterlogged archaeological woods with poly(ethylene) glycols mixtures by differential scanning calorimetry

The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique was demonstrated to be a reliable and fast tool for the investigation of the selective impregnation of archaeological woods with poly(ethylene) glycols (PEGs) mixtures. To this aim, waterlogged archaeological woods were impregnated by using aqueous mixtures of PEG 4000 and PEG 400 as well as mixtures of these polymers in the melt state. The efficiency of the treatments was also estimated by determining the total consolidant content entrapped into the cavities of degraded wood by means of DSC and thermogravimetry.
