Comparison of cyclodeviation and duction measurement in Graves' orbitopathy patients using different devices

2011

To compare measurement outcomes of different devices measuring cyclodeviation and ductions in Graves' orbitopathy (GO) patients. Cyclodeviation in GO patients was measured using the Harms tangent screen (HTS), the cycloforometer of Franceschetti, and the synoptometer. Ductions were measured using the modified perimeter, the Goldmann perimeter and the Maddox tangent scale (MTS). In 13 patients, cyclodeviation in primary position, up-, and downgaze was measured with the above-mentioned devices. The mean differences ranged from 0.3º to 3.1º and were smallest between the HTS and the cycloforometer (89% of all measurements within 2º difference). Measurement of abduction, adduction, elevation, an…

Safety of plasma-derived protein C for treating disseminated intravascular coagulation in adult patients with active cancer

2012

Cancer-related disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a life-threatening condition for which no effective treatment is currently available. Protein C (PC), a modulator of coagulation as well as the inflammatory system, has been successfully tested (in its activated recombinant form [a-rPC]) in sepsis-related coagulopathy, but with an increased risk for major bleeding. Plasma-derived PC (pd-PC) is more suitable than a-rPC in patients at high risk from bleeding due to its self-limiting process. We carried out a single-arm study evaluating the role of pd-PC in adult cancer patients with overt DIC. Over a period of 3 years, we treated 19 patients with overt DIC and a PC plasma concentr…

Intravenous natural beta-interferon in white patients with chronic hepatitis C who are nonresponders to alpha-interferon.

1998

Objectives: α-Interferons (α-IFN) have been shown to be effective in the treatment of chronic viral C hepatitis, but their efficacy remains unsatisfactory. Recently natural β-interferon (β-IFN) administered by intravenous infusion has been used successfully. Methods: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravenous β-IFN administration we treated 20 patients with histologically proven chronic hepatitis C who were nonresponders to at least two previous courses of α-IFN treatment. All patients received 6 million units (MU) of natural human fibroblast β-IFN by drip infusion, 6 times per wk for 8 wk and were followed up for 6 months after suspension of treatment. Results: Five patients (25%) …

Urinary glycosaminoglycans in Graves' ophthalmopathy.

1990

An increased accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in retrobulbar tissues has been reported in patients with thyroid eye disease. We examined the quantitative urinary GAG excretion in 101 patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy of different classes, 36 patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism without ophthalmopathy, 14 patients with toxic nodular goitre and 103 control subjects. Glycosaminoglycans were isolated from 24-h urine collections by precipitation with cetylpyridinium chloride and ethanol followed by photometrical quantification of hexuronic acids after reaction with carbazole. In comparison with the control group (15.8, 10.4, 21.6 mg/24 h; median, 25th, 75th percentile) a significant …

Does thyroid surgery for Graves' disease improve health-related quality of life?

2012

Abstract PURPOSE: Graves' disease can induce alterations of the psychosocial well-being that negatively influence the overall well-being of patients. Among the current treatments, surgery has limited indications, and its impact on the health-related quality of life has not been well clarified. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of surgery on the quality of life. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients who underwent total thyroidectomy for Graves' disease in our surgical unit between April 2002 and December 2009 were administered a questionnaire concerning four issues: organic alterations and clinical manifestations, neurovegetative system disturbances, impairment of daily activities, psyc…

Prevalence of myxomatous mitral valve prolapse in patients with lymphocytic thyroiditis

1995

Abstract In conclusion, given the cardiac (mitral regurgitation, endocarditis, thromboembolic complications, arrhythmic sudden death) and neurologic (cerebral embolic event) complications of the pathologic forms of MVP, 6,8 physicians should look carefully for myxomatous involvement of the mitral valve and prolapse in patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases. Patients should be monitored and prophylactic antibiotic treatment recommended when appropriate.

Investigating Risk Factors for Internet Gaming Disorder: A Comparison of Patients with Addictive Gaming, Pathological Gamblers and Healthy Controls r…

2013

Engaging in online games has become increasingly important as a part of leisure activity in adolescents and adults. While the majority of people use these games in a healthy way, epidemiological studies show that some develop excessive use and symptoms that are related to those of substance-related addictions. Despite increasing research concerning the epidemiology of internet gaming disorder (IGD), predisposing factors have been examined to a lesser extent. Knowing about specific risk factors would help clarify the nosological features of IGD and enhance prevention and intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between personality traits and IGD. A total of 115 patients m…

Left ventricular volume determination using Albunex.

1996

The aim of this study was to assess the ability of intravenous injection of Albunex to improve left ventricular volume determination in patients with various cardiac diseases. It is conceivable that the intravenous injection of microbubbles could improve echocardiographic left ventricular border delineation leading to improved interobserver variability. Echocardiograms were obtained during simultaneous intravenous injection of 0.08 and 0.12 ml/kg Albunex (four-chamber view). Within 6 hours after the recording of the contrast echocardiograms routine left heart angiography was performed. Volumes were measured using the slice method in native and contrast echocardiograms as well as in the angi…

Lacrimal gland herniation in Graves ophthalmopathy: a simple and useful MRI biomarker of disease activity

2019

Lacrimal gland (LG) involvement in patients with Graves ophthalmopathy (GO) has been considered as a potential cause of the associated GO symptoms and different studies demonstrated the LG involvement in patients with GO than healthy controls. The aim of this study was to evaluate LG involvement, through measurement of its herniation, using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) index, in patients with different GO activities. Thirty-two consecutive Caucasian patients affected by GO were enrolled and grouped in group A (16 with inactive GO, CAS < 3) and B (16 with active GO, CAS ≥ 3) according to their GO activity. All patients underwent clinical-endocrinological assessment, a complete ocular e…

Adaptive response of human skeletal muscle to simulated hypergravity condition

1985

The mechanical behaviour of leg extensor muscles of five international-level athletes was evaluated during 13 months training period. Drop jumps, average mechanical power during 15 S continuous jump, and vertical jumps performed with and without extra weights were used to measure explosive power characteristics. The data recorded in vertical jumps was utilized for construction of force-velocity relationship (F-V curve). The athletes did not show improvement in any of the variables studied after 12 months of intensive systematic training programme. It was assumed that the subjects already had reached their upper limit of performance. However, after that the athletes underwent a simulated 3 w…
