Rational for statin use in psoriatic patients

2013

Psoriasis represents a common skin disease which is clinically manifested by chronic cutaneous lesions. It has been observed that psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, which is contributed to the inappropriate lipid metabolism. Statins are commonly used in clinical practice to lower cholesterol concentration and, accordingly, decrease the individual risk of developing a cardiovascular episode. There have been reports that statin administration could also result in better management of psoriasis. The observed beneficial effects are contributed to the effects on lipid metabolism, including that in skin, as well as anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory pro…

Stress and recovery assessment during simulated microgravity: Effects of exercise during a long-term head down tilt bed rest in women.

2009

International audience; The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a 60-day head-down tilt long-term bed rest (HDT) on stress and recovery in sixteen healthy female volunteers. Participants were randomly assigned to either an exercise group (Exe) that followed a training program combining resistive and aerobic exercises, or to a no-exercise control group (Ctl). Psychological states were assessed using the Rest-Q, a validated questionnaire based on stress-recovery responses. A longitudinal analysis revealed significant changes in the general and specific-stress scales for all participants throughout the experiment with a critical stage from supine to standing posture leading to a …

Arrhythmieprofil und Herzfrequenz bei Hyperthyreose

2008

Arrhythmia profiles and heart rates, obtained by 24-hour ECG monitoring, were analysed in 48 patients with hyperthyroidism before (T3 level: 331 +/- 108 ng/100 ml, heart rate: 95 +/- 13/min), during (T3 level: 202 +/- 98 ng/100 ml, heart rate: 85 +/- 11/min) and after (T3 level: 149 +/- 41 ng/100 ml, heart rate: 79 +/- 9/min) antithyroid treatment. 50 persons in whom organic heart disease has been excluded by invasive and noninvasive tests served as controls. Only 6% of patients had repetitive ventricular arrhythmias (Lown group IV) before treatment (controls: 4%; P greater than 0.05). Supraventricular extrasystoles were common both before and after treatment (P less than 0.001), especially…

Intracardiac Cardioversion for Ablation of the Atrioventricular Conduction System in Patients with Drug Resistant Atrial Flutter

1983

The technique of intracardiac cardioversion for the ablation of the atrioventricular conduction system was used in three male patients (65, 53 and 57 years of age) with atrial flutter unresponsive to medical management. In the first patient a DC current of 80 J was applied while the other patients required 300 and 400 J respectively. In the first patient a transient third degree AVblock was induced enabling the ventricular rate to be easily controlled with drugs. This patient died 5 months later of resistant congestive heart failure. Autopsy revealed no gross evidence of myocardial damage in the tricuspid valve area or in the interventricular septum. In the other two patients a permanent th…

Is global elimination of HCV realistic?

2017

The elimination of hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been made possible through the availability of new antiviral drugs which may now be administered to all patients with HCV infection, even those with decompensated cirrhosis. The goal of the World Health Organization (WHO) is to reduce the incidence of chronic hepatitis infection from the current 6-10 million to 0.9 million cases of chronic infections by 2030, and annual deaths from 1.4 million to fewer than 0.5 million. Achieving these targets will require full implementation of epidemiological knowledge of HCV infection, screening and testing practices and strategies to link HCV patients to care. This review will focus on the current state of …

Intracoronary Infusion of Thioflavin-S to Study Microvascular Obstruction in a Model of Myocardial Infarction

2015

Abstract Introduction and objectives Microvascular obstruction exerts deleterious effects after myocardial infarction. To elucidate the role of ischemia-reperfusion injury on the occurrence and dynamics of microvascular obstruction, we performed a preliminary methodological study to accurately define this process in an in vivo model. Methods Myocardial infarction was induced in swine by means of 90-min of occlusion of the mid left anterior descending coronary artery using angioplasty balloons . Intracoronary infusion of thioflavin-S was applied and compared with traditional intra-aortic or intraventricular instillation. The left anterior descending coronary artery perfused area and microvas…

No Evidence for Classic Thrombotic Microangiopathy in COVID-19

2021

Background: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) triggers systemic infection with involvement of the respiratory tract. There are some patients developing haemostatic abnormalities during their infection with a considerably increased risk of death. Materials and Methods: Patients (n = 85) with SARS-CoV-2 infection attending the University Medical Center, Mainz, from 3 March to 15 May 2020 were retrospectively included in this study. Data regarding demography, clinical features, treatment and laboratory parameters were analyzed. Twenty patients were excluded for assessment of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) due to lack of laboratory data. Resu…

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of thymoma-associated myasthenia gravis

2021

[Background and purpose] Prognosis of myasthenia gravis (MG) in patients with thymoma is not well established. Moreover, it is not clear whether thymoma recurrence or unresectable lesions entail a worse prognosis of MG.

RIPHeart (Remote Ischemic Preconditioning for Heart Surgery) Study: Myocardial Dysfunction, Postoperative Neurocognitive Dysfunction, and 1 Year Foll…

2018

Background Remote ischemic preconditioning ( RIPC ) has been suggested to protect against certain forms of organ injury after cardiac surgery. Previously, we reported the main results of RIPHeart (Remote Ischemic Preconditioning for Heart Surgery) Study, a multicenter trial randomizing 1403 cardiac surgery patients receiving either RIPC or sham‐ RIPC . Methods and Results In this follow‐up paper, we present 1‐year follow‐up of the composite primary end point and its individual components (all‐cause mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke and acute renal failure), in a sub‐group of patients, intraoperative myocardial dysfunction assessed by transesophageal echocardiography and the incidenc…
