Actual provision as an alternative criterion to improve the efficiency of payments for ecosystem services for C sequestration in semiarid vineyards
2016
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency of the PES scheme actually used in the Sicilian rural development program, based on an egalitarian criterion, and proposing an alternative scheme in order to guarantee a greater equity and fairness of premium distribution in relation to soil carbon (C) sequestration potential. We, first, assessed the ecosystem services (ES) provided by agri-environmental measures (AEM) in terms of SOC stock increase in Sicilian vineyards. Based on these data we evaluated the efficiency of agro-environmental payments according to an egalitarian criterion and simulated the effects of the actual provision criterion adoption. Results showed that the adoption o…
Privacy protection in a mobile biomedical information collection service
2006
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2006 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad This report presents a model in a mobile health care environment and uses a combination of existing technologies to build a privacy protection scheme. This work covers security issues in both the wireless and wired network, and proposes solutions to these issues. A framework using PKI to distribute digital certificates combined with strong encryption using the AES algorithm is described. Using this framework in combination with a RBAC model using location control we present some principles that will ensure privacy in a mobile wireless biomedical information collection service.
New cropping systems in semi-arid Mediterranean environments: potential role of medicinal and aromatic plants
2005
The semi-arid Mediterranean environments represent somehow “fragile” ecosystems, whose correct management needs some special attention. It is crucial therefore to study and point out some innovative farming systems able to deal with an income for workers, but in the meantime environmentally friendly and requiring the minimum energetic and technical inputs. In such sense, the cultivation of some selected medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) could be an important strategy. In our work we made an attempt to to sketch a comprehensive evaluation of the input levels required by 23 selected herbaceous MAPs, taking into consideration the indicative average levels of the energetic (including manpowe…
Stimulation with carbachol alters endomembrane distribution and plasma membrane expression of intracellular proteins in lacrimal acinar cells.
2000
The events that lead to Sjogren's autoimmune processes in the lacrimal gland remain poorly understood. The acinar cell's responses to acute cholinergic stimulation include release of secretory products across the apical plasma membrane (apm) and a number of processes related to traffic between endomembrane compartments and the basal-lateral plasma membranes (blm), such as recruitment of Na, K-ATPase, accelerated recycling, and accelerated transcytosis of secretory IgA. We tested the hypothesis that stimulation-induced acceleration of endomembrane traffic is accompanied by changes in compartmentation and increased blm expression of proteins that are normally sequestered in endomembrane compa…
Mucosa-dependent muscarinic liberation of prostaglandins from rat isolated trachea.
1995
1. The present study examined whether cholinoceptor stimulation modulates the release of arachidonic acid-derived mediators from rat isolate tracheae. 2. Tracheae were preincubated with [3H]-arachidonic acid and the outflow of 3H-compounds was determined. Acetylcholine and the muscarinic agonist, carbachol but not nicotine, increased the rate of tritium outflow maximally by about 30%. The M3 receptor-preferring antagonist rho-fluoro-hexahydrosiladiphenidol was more effective than pirenzepine and methoctramine in antagonizing the effect of acetylcholine. 3. High performance liquid chromatography analysis (methanol gradient) of the released 3H-compounds showed that one peak, co-eluting with […
Antagonism by SR 48692 of mechanical responses to neurotensin in rat intestine.
1996
Abstract 1. The effects of SR 48692 on neurotensin (NT)-induced mechanical responses were investigated in rat duodenum and proximal colon by use of isometric, isovolumic preparations. 2. SR 48692 inhibited the relaxant responses to NT in duodenal circular and longitudinal muscle. It also antagonized the NT-induced contractile effects in duodenal circular muscle and in proximal colon (both muscular layers). 3. From Schild analysis and pA2 value for SR 48692 was 8.2 in tissues where NT induced relaxant effects and 7.5 in tissues where NT induced contractile effects and the slope of the regression line was not significantly different from unity, indicating competitive antagonism. 4. SR 48692 d…
Pre- and postsynaptic effects of muscarinic agonists in the guinea-pig ileum
1980
The effects of several muscarinic agonists on smooth muscle (postsynaptic effect) and on acetylcholine release (presynaptic effect) were compared in the longitudinal muscle-myenteric plexus preparation of the guinea-pig ileum. 1. For release experiments the acetylcholine stores of the preparation were labelled with 3H-choline. Electrical field stimulation in the absence of a cholinesterase inhibitor caused an outflow of tritium that reflected release of 3H-acetylcholine. The agonists oxotremorine, arecaidinepropargylester, methylfurmethide, muscarine, carbachol, arecoline and pilocarpine inhibited the stimulation-induced outflow in a concentration-dependent manner. At the highest concentrat…
Compensatory mechanisms enhance hippocampal acetylcholine release in transgenic mice expressing human acetylcholinesterase
2001
Central cholinergic neurotransmission was studied in learning-impaired transgenic mice expressing human acetylcholinesterase (hAChE-Tg). Total catalytic activity of AChE was approximately twofold higher in synaptosomes from hippocampus, striatum and cortex of hAChE-Tg mice as compared with controls (FVB/N mice). Extracellular acetylcholine (ACh) levels in the hippocampus, monitored by microdialysis in the absence or presence of 10(-8)-10(-3) M neostigmine in the perfusion fluid, were indistinguishable in freely moving control and hAChE-Tg mice. Muscarinic receptor functions were unchanged as indicated by similar effects of scopolamine on ACh release and of carbachol on inositol phosphate fo…
