Production and energetic performance of Carthamus tinctorius L. in the Mediterranean environment

2012

One of the most important aspects when managing an agro-energy crop is the energy gain factor, that is, the surplus in energy which remains following an appraisal of the relevant inputs and outputs. This aspect is of fundamental importance when choosing a species in a particular growth environment as it gives crucial information on the economic and energetic feasibility of a species and allows us to evaluate potential costs in order to obtain a given production and energy performance. In the agro-energy sector, this indicator is not always included in the evaluation process, making the agronomic and energy results obtained often incomplete. In the Mediterranean area, one potential crop for …

Nitrogen Availability Drives Mycorrhizal Effects on Wheat Growth, Nitrogen Uptake and Recovery under Salt Stress

2022

The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is generally considered effective in improving salt tolerance in plants; however, the advantages it offers can vary greatly depending on the context in which it occurs; furthermore, the mechanisms underlying these responses are still unclear. A study was conducted to investigate the role of nitrogen (N) availability on the effectiveness of AM symbiosis in durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) plants grown under salt stress. Plants were grown in pots in the absence or in presence of salt stress (soil electrical conductivity of 1.50 and 13.00 dS m−1, respectively), with or without AM fungi inoculation (Rhizophagus irregularis and Funneliformis mosseae), …

Population structure of the sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula across a depth gradient

2006

Sea urchins are considered to have a paramount role in structuring rocky shallow communities. Under certain conditions, grazing by sea-urchins has been reported to produce a shift from macroalgae-dominated communities to barren habitat dominated by encrusting algae. However, this process is not recorded at all depths. The effect of depth on the structure of the sea-urchin populations may be thus a key feature to understand the origin and maintenance of the barren habitat within certain depths. In the present study, the structure of Paracentrotus lividus (Lam.) and Arbacia lixula (L.) populations are analyzed across a depth gradient in the Ustica Island MPA (NW Mediterranean), where the barr…

Grassland fire effect on soil organic carbon reservoirs in semiarid environment.

2011

The effect of fire on soil organic matter content is highly variable and depends on several factors including fire intensity, soil type and nature of burned material. Grassland in semiarid environment are often managed by shepherds with annual burning in order to enhance pasture recovery. The aim of this work was investigating the effect of fire as grassland management tool on soil organic carbon (SOC) reservoirs and on post-fire plant recovery. The study was conducted on Hyparrenia hirta grassland and Ampelodesma mauritanicus grassland, located in the Province of Palermo, in the north of Sicily. Soil samples were collected at two depth (0-5 and 5-20 cm) before and after experimental fire a…
