Hybrid magnetic materials based on layered double hydroxides: from the chemistry towards the applications

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are the leitmotiv of this dissertation. Contradicting the assertion that “any past was better”, LDHs have been continuously revisited from the middle of the twentieth century, and represent an excellent example of the never-ending beauty of Chemistry. New synthetic perspectives are giving a new impetus to LDH chemistry, which among hybrid materials, are finding their heyday. This is resulting in novel materials and also paving the way for new fundamental and practical insights. Few-layer Black Phosphorous Catalyzes Radical Additions to Alkenes Faster than Low-valence Metals

Abstract The substitution of catalytic metals by p‐block main elements has a tremendous impact not only in the fundamentals but also in the economic and ecological fingerprint of organic reactions. Here we show that few‐layer black phosphorous (FL‐BP), a recently discovered and now readily available 2D material, catalyzes different radical additions to alkenes with an initial turnover frequency (TOF0) up to two orders of magnitude higher than representative state‐of‐the‐art metal complex catalysts at room temperature. A Robustness Approach to Reliability

Reliability of products is here regarded with respect to failure avoidance rather than probability of failure. To avoid failures, we emphasize variation and suggest some powerful tools for handling failures due to variation. Thus, instead of technical calculation of probabilities from data that usually are too weak for correct results, we emphasize the statistical thinking that puts the designers focus on the critical product functions. En España, más de 4000 personas serán diagnosticadas anualmente con un tumor maligno cerebral que en su mayoría recaerán en el grupo que se denomina Gliomas Malignos. La mayoría son glioblastomas (grado IV) (GB), siendo estos el tipo más agresivo. Se espera que la supervivencia media para los pacientes tratados con protocolo estándar sea de alrededor de 15 meses. La esperanza de vida tan reducida se debe a que son tumores muy proliferativos y heterogéneos. Esto subraya la necesidad de buscar alternativas para mejorar su manejo.
