This study discusses a teaching experience that has been taking place at the School of Economics and Business at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since the academic year 2012-2013. We implement a self-evaluation mechanism: students working on group projects are required to deliver a joint declaration in which they asses their individual participation in the accomplishment of the joint task. The importance of this device is twofold. On the one hand, it reduces conflictivity among team members and, on the other hand, it delivers quantitative elements to the lecturer for grading the individual participation to the group report. Abstract A fast and reliable two-step method has been established for the chemical synthesis of 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate, 6-thioguanosine 5′-diphosphate and 6-thioguanosine 5′-triphosphate starting from the ribonucleoside. In the first step, 6-thioguanosine dissolved in triethyl phosphate, at high yield reacts with phosphorus oxide trichloride to 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate which is purified by anion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex using a step gradient of hydrochloric acid. Synthesis and copper-mediated nuclease activity of a tetracationic tris(2,2′-bipyridine) ligand

Abstract We report herein the synthesis of a novel tetracationic tris(2,2′-bipyridine) ligand 4 . We show that this ligand metalated with copper(II), and in the presence of ascorbate as a reducing agent, strongly damages pUC18 plasmid DNA. Copper complex formation was demonstrated by ESI-MS (electrospray ionization-mass spectrum) at a 1:3 ligand to metal ratio. Binding of both 4 and its copper(II) complex to CT-DNA (calf thymus DNA) was characterized by viscosimetry, thermal denaturation and fluorescence-based competition assays. Abstract The Container Drayage Problem (CDP) aims at routing a fleet of trucks, based at a common terminal, to serve customers while minimizing the total travel distance. Each trip starts from and ends at the terminal, and handles a subset of customers. Each customer requires either that a container is picked up or delivered. We introduce a more realistic variant, i.e., the Multi-trip Multi-period CDP with Release and Due Dates (MM-CDP-RDD), in which the planning horizon is composed of several periods (days). Accumulation of sleep loss among shift-working truck drivers.

Sleep loss is known to contribute to road traffic accidents. Professional drivers are vulnerable to curtailment of sleep due to long driving bouts and shift work. To fill in the gap in the literature related to the buildup of sleep loss in irregular shift systems, we recorded the sleep and working hours of 47 shift-working long-haul truck drivers during a two-week period. Sleep (time in bed) was verified by actigraphy and sleep logs. Sleepiness was measured using the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS). Individual sleep need was based on self-assessments. Uvarov's theory of locust phase polymorphism implies a differential phase-specific gene expression. It was the goal of the present investigation to provide data on the molecular level for this concept. We used the technique of 2D gel electrophoresis to generate haemolymph polypeptide maps from mature locust males. Under the given conditions we identified 238 polypeptide spots by their molecular weight and isoelectrical point. Isolated and crowded males from the Mainz strain, all originating from crowded ancesters, differed in 20 spots: three were solitary-specific and 17 crowded-specific.
