TRADITION AND MODERNITY OF CATALAN VAULTS: HISTORICAL AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

2012

The Lipid-Sensor Candidates CD36 and GPR120 Are Differentially Regulated by Dietary Lipids in Mouse Taste Buds: Impact on Spontaneous Fat Preference

2011

BACKGROUND: Recent studies in rodents and humans suggest that the chemoreception of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) in oral cavity is involved in the spontaneous preference for fatty foods and might contribute to the obesity risk. CD36 and GPR120 are LCFA receptors identified in rodent taste bud cells. The fact that CD36 or GPR120 gene inactivation leads to a decrease in the preference for lipids raises the question of the respective role(s) played by these gustatory lipid-sensor candidates. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using a combination of biochemical, nutritional and behavioural studies in wild-type, CD36(+/-)and CD36(-/-) mice, it was found that: 1°) CD36 and GPR120 display different …

Tracking Ca2+ ATPase intermediates in real time by x-ray solution scattering

2020

Sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA) transporters regulate calcium signaling by active calcium ion reuptake to internal stores. Structural transitions associated with transport have been characterized by x-ray crystallography, but critical intermediates involved in the accessibility switch across the membrane are missing. We combined time-resolved x-ray solution scattering (TR-XSS) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for real-time tracking of concerted SERCA reaction cycle dynamics in the native membrane. The equilibrium [Ca2] E1 state before laser activation differed in the domain arrangement compared with crystal structures, and following laser-induced release o…

Measurement of brain tissue pressure in cold induced cerebral oedema.

1973

Experiments were performed in order to evaluate the concept that brain oedema is associated with an increase in local interstitial fluid pressure. Assuming that the pressure measured by the cotton wick technique represents the hydrostatic interstitial fluid pressure, the tissue pressure was recorded with pressure transducers in the white matter adjacent and remote to a local cold injury, in the opposite hemisphere, and in the cisterna magna. In 9 cats during steady-state conditions mean tissue pressures between 1.20±0.30 mm Hg and 2.33±0.80 mm Hg were found, as compared to a mean CSF pressure of 5.17±0.82 mm Hg. The tissue pressure was found to increase significantly adjacent to the lesion …

Dissimilar PTH, Gastrin, and Calcitonin Responses to Oral Calcium and Peptones in Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia, Primary Hyperparathyroidism, and Norma…

2005

We analyzed gastrin, PTH, and calcitonin responses to oral calcium and peptones in hypocalciuric hypercalcemia, mild primary hyperparathyroidism, and normal controls. We observed diverse hormonal responses that may help in the differential diagnosis of these conditions. Introduction: Hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (HH) is consequent to calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) genetic mutations or anti-CaSR antibodies. CaSR is expressed in parathyroid tissue, thyroid C cells, and gastrin-secreting cells, where it has been suggested that on calcium and/or amino acid allosteric activation, promotes gastrin secretion. Materials and Methods: We evaluated gastrin, PTH, and calcitonin responses to oral calciu…

Increased Gastrin and Calcitonin Secretion after Oral Calcium or Peptones Administration in Patients with Hypercalciuria: A Clue to an Alteration in …

2005

The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) has been detected in human antral gastrin-secreting cells, where, upon calcium and/or amino acid allosteric activation, it stimulates gastrin secretion. Patients with absorptive hypercalciuria (AH) display an enhanced gastric acid output; therefore, we evaluated the secretion of gastrin in subjects with AH ( 30 subjects vs. 30 healthy female controls, all postmenopausal) after oral calcium administration ( 1 g calcium gluconate) and, on a separate occasion, after peptone loading test ( protein hydrolyzed, 10 g). Gastrin and monomeric calcitonin responses were higher in AH after both oral calcium administration ( P < 0.01) and peptone loading ( P< 0.01). B…

2020

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium homeostasis plays an essential role in cellular calcium signaling, intra-ER protein chaperoning and maturation, as well as in the interaction of the ER with other organelles. Calcium is accumulated in the ER by sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPases (SERCA enzymes) that generate by active, ATP-dependent transport, a several thousand-fold calcium ion concentration gradient between the cytosol (low nanomolar) and the ER lumen (high micromolar). SERCA enzymes are coded by three genes that by alternative splicing give rise to several isoforms, which can display isoform-specific calcium transport characteristics. SERCA expression levels and isoenzyme compo…
