Abstract We report results from an observational and modeling study of reactive chemistry in the tropospheric plume emitted by Redoubt Volcano, Alaska. Our measurements include the first observations of Br and I degassing from an Alaskan volcano, the first study of O 3 evolution in a volcanic plume, as well as the first detection of BrO in the plume of a passively degassing Alaskan volcano. This study also represents the first detailed spatially-resolved comparison of measured and modeled O 3 depletion in a volcanic plume. Absolutely dated, annually resolved sea surface temperature records from middle to higher latitudes covering long time intervals are crucial to better understand the climate system. Such data can potentially be obtained from variations in shell growth of long-lived bivalves such as Arctica islandica. This study presents the first statistically robust 178-yr long composite chronology (covering 1835–2012) based on sixteen live-collected and subfossil specimens of A. islandica from unpolluted, shallow waters of Northeast Iceland. We present a case of posterior ventricular septal rupture associated to left ventricular aneurysm manged, during peri-operative period, by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography findings add adjunctive and more accurate information regarding morphological details of the ventricular septal rupture rather than two-dimensional echocardiography, allowing, meanwhile, the detection of the outcome of the surgical repair.

Phylogenetic relationships of a group of North American desert genera of the Papaveraceae subfam. Papaveroideae and Platystemonoideae were investigated with an RFLP analysis of three PCR-amplified chloroplast genome regions. In agreement with earlier results it was found that subfam. Platystemonoideae is nested within subfam. Papaveroideae. The group under study is characterized by a large number of generic autapomorphies but only few informative synapomorphies. This is interpreted as strong evidence for a rapid radiation event caused by major climatic changes in the past.
