Functional Connection Between the Clb5 Cyclin, the Protein Kinase C Pathway and the Swi4 Transcription Factor in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract The rsf12 mutation was isolated in a synthetic lethal screen for genes functionally interacting with Swi4. RSF12 is CLB5. The clb5 swi4 mutant cells arrest at G2/M due to the activation of the DNA-damage checkpoint. Defects in DNA integrity was confirmed by the increased rates of chromosome loss and mitotic recombination. Other results suggest the presence of additional defects related to morphogenesis. Interestingly, genes of the PKC pathway rescue the growth defect of clb5 swi4, and pkc1 and slt2 mutations are synthetic lethal with clb5, pointing to a connection between Clb5, the PKC pathway, and Swi4. The complete genome of a Tomato black ring virus isolate (TBRV-Mirs) (RNA1, 7,366 nt and RNA2, 4,640 nt) and the RNA2 sequences (4,437; 4,445; and 4,442 nts) of three Grapevine chrome mosaic virus isolates (GCMV-H6, -H15, and -H27) were determined. All RNAs contained a single open reading frame encoding polyproteins of 254 kDa (p1) and 149 kDa (p2) for TBRV-Mirs RNA1 and RNA2, respectively, and 146 kDa for GCMV RNA2. p1 of TBRV-Mirs showed the highest identity with TBRV-MJ (94 %), Beet ringspot virus (BRSV, 82 %), and Grapevine Anatolian ringspot virus (GARSV, 66 %), while p2 showed the highest identity with TBRV isolates MJ (89 %) and ED (85 %), followed by BRSV (65 %), GCMV (58 %), and GA…

Investigation of optical and radiation properties of oxygen deficient silica glasses

The deficiency of oxygen in pure silica manifests an absorption band at 5 eV as well as an absorption band of higher intensity at 7.6 eV. The band at 5 eV is associated with lone twofold-coordinated silicon centers. The nature of the main band at 7.6 eV has been studied using silica samples with different levels of oxygen deficiency. The excitation via the 7.6 eV band produces a photoelectric response as well as inner center and recombination type luminescence. Two main luminescence bands of the twofold-coordinated silicon center appear: a blue band (2.7 eV) and a UV band (4.4 eV). Optical switching of quantum states inside self-assembled quantum dots

Abstract Photoluminescence and excitation of photoluminescence spectroscopy have been performed for two kinds of single InAs self-assembled quantum dots grown on GaAs. The presence of unintentional impurities (donors and acceptors) offers the possibility to switch from negative to positively charged excitons by selectively exciting impurity related optical transitions.

Viral infections are often the etiological agents of severe acute and chronic human diseases. Their peculiar biology usually leads to the need of design specific therapies for each virus, and the eradication of the viruses and the healing of the patients very often are not reached also after decades of theoretical and applied researches. Luminescence properties of III-V multi-junctions solar cells

The recent achievement of multi-junctions solar cells, based on III-V semiconductors, exceeding 43% efficiency, has stimulated a rapid growth of concentration photovoltaic (CPV) technology. The large efficiency of these cells is based on the matching between the semiconductors band gap and the solar spectrum and the capability of working under concentrated illumination, up to ~1000 suns. The research pays, therefore, attention to investigate in detail the mechanisms that affect the conversion efficiency, such as the non radiative losses that increase the cell temperature thus favoring the electron-hole (e-h) recombination. The origin of slow electron recombination processes in dye-sensitized solar cells with alumina barrier coatings

We investigate the effect of a thin alumina coating of nanocrystalline TiO2 films on recombination dynamics of dye-sensitized solar cells. Both coated and uncoated cells were measured by a combination of techniques: transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and open-circuit voltage decay. It is found that the alumina barrier reduces the recombination of photoinjected electrons to both dye cations and the oxidized redox couple. Self-organization in the A + B → 0 reaction of charged particles

The formalism of many-particle densities developed earlier by the authors is applied to the study of the self-organization phenomena occuring during the course of the bimolecular A + B → 0 reaction between charged particles, interacting via the Coulomb law. Unlike the Debye-Huckel theory, charge screening has an essentially non-equilibrium character. It is shown that for the asymmetric mobility of reactants (DA = 0, DB ≠ 0) similar immobile reactants A form aggregates characterized by a sharp maximum, observed at short distances, in the joint correlation function XA(r, t).
