The validity of heart failure diagnoses in the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register.

2019

Background: Contemporary validation studies of register-based heart failure diagnoses based on current guidelines and complete clinical data are lacking in Finland and internationally. Our objective was to assess the positive and negative predictive values of heart failure diagnoses in a nationwide hospital discharge register. Methods: Using Finnish Hospital Discharge Register data from 2013–2015, we obtained the medical records for 120 patients with a register-based diagnosis for heart failure (cases) and for 120 patients with a predisposing condition for heart failure, but without a heart failure diagnosis (controls). The medical records of all patients were assessed by a physician who c…

Analgesic use among community-dwelling people aged 75 years and older : a population-based interview study

2010

Abstract Background: Pain is often underrecognized and undertreated among older people. However, older people may be particularly susceptible to adverse drug reactions linked to prescription and nonprescription analgesics. Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of analgesic use among a random sample of community-dwelling people aged ≥75 years, and to investigate factors associated with daily and as-needed analgesic use. Methods: A random sample of people aged ≥75 years was drawn from the population register in Kuopio, Finland, in November 2003. Data on prescription and nonprescription analgesic use were elicited during nurse interviews conducted once for each parti…

Clinical Characteristics, Treatment, and Evolution of 89 Mucoceles in Children

2009

Purpose The present study was undertaken to evaluate mucoceles in the oral cavity of pediatric patients, including the clinical characteristics, treatment, and progress of the lesions. Patients and Methods A retrospective study was performed from the medical records of patients (0-14 years old) treated for oral mucoceles between 1998 and 2008 in a reference children's hospital. All subjects with mucoceles on lips, mouth, buccal mucosa, and palate were included. The following data were recorded: age, gender, history of trauma, location, size, progression, time before diagnosis, treatment, histologic type, follow-up time, and recurrence. Results A total of 89 patients (mean age, 6.1 years) pa…

Clinical characteristics, treatment and outcome of 28 oral haemangiomas in paediatric patients

2010

Objective: To present a large series of oral haemangiomas in children, analyzing the clinical characteristics, treatment and outcome of oral haemangiomas in 28 children. Material and Methods: We conducted an observational retrospective study, reviewing medical records with clinical diagnosis of haemangioma between 1990 and 2006 at the Children?s Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Hospital Universitario la Fe, Valencia. All patients with a clinical, radiographic, pathologically confirmed diagnosis of oral haemangioma were included. Results: The study included 28 patients (19 females and 9 males) with a mean age of 4.27 years (range 0-14 years). Nine were congenital haemangioma. The most fr…

Evidence of impaired coronary flow reserve and elevated microvascular resistances in a case of recurrent left apical ballooning.

2011

A 56-year old man was admitted for precordial pain associated with dyspnea and evidence of myocardial ischemia on ECG and cardiac ultrasound. His previous history included an episode of left apical ballooning five years before. At angiography, no evidence of significant epicardial coronary artery disease was manifest. Interestingly, both coronary flow reserve and the index of microvascular resistances were abnormal, showing evidence of impaired microvascular function. This is the first report providing direct evidence of microvascular dysfunction in a patient with (recurrent) apical ballooning.

Empirical examination of the indicator ‘pediatric gastroenteritis hospitalization rate’ based on administrative hospital data in Italy

2014

Background: Awareness of the importance of strengthening investments in child health and monitoring the quality of services in the pediatric field is increasing. The Pediatric Quality Indicators developed by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), use hospital administrative data to identify admissions that could be avoided through high-quality outpatient care. Building on this approach, the purpose of this study is to perform an empirical examination of the 'pediatric gastroenteritis admission rate' indicator in Italy, under the assumption that lower admission rates are associated with better management at the primary care level and with overall better quality of care for…

Online video-based resistance training improves the physical capacity of junior basketball athletes.

2012

Junior basketball athletes require a well-designed resistance training program to improve their physical development. Lack of expert supervision and resistance training in junior development pathways may be overcome by implementing an online video-based program. The aim of this study was to compare the magnitude of improvement (change) in physical performance and strength and functional movement patterns of junior basketball athletes using either a fully supervised or an online video-based resistance training program. Thirty-eight junior basketball athletes (males, n = 17; age, 14 ± 1 year; height, 1.79 ± 0.10 m; mass, 67 ± 12 kg; females, n = 21; age, 15 ± 1 year; height, 1.70 ± 0.07 m; ma…

Cardiac kinematic parameters computed from video of in situ beating heart

2017

AbstractMechanical function of the heart during open-chest cardiac surgery is exclusively monitored by echocardiographic techniques. However, little is known about local kinematics, particularly for the reperfused regions after ischemic events. We report a novel imaging modality, which extracts local and global kinematic parameters from videos of in situ beating hearts, displaying live video cardiograms of the contraction events. A custom algorithm tracked the movement of a video marker positioned ad hoc onto a selected area and analyzed, during the entire recording, the contraction trajectory, displacement, velocity, acceleration, kinetic energy and force. Moreover, global epicardial veloc…

2015

AbstractObjectiveThe present study aimed to translate the English version of the Nutritional Form For the Elderly into Simplified Chinese, as well as to test the reliability (homogeneity and stability) and validity (content and construct validity) of the Chinese version of the Nutritional Form For the Elderly (NUFFE-CHI).DesignThe study adopted a cross-sectional design. The English version of the NUFFE was translated into Simplified Chinese and a questionnaire survey was conducted. The data were analysed with statistical methods to estimate the homogeneity, stability, content and construct validity.SettingJinzhou City, China.SubjectsA total number of 701 community-dwelling older adults answ…
