Adipose tissue lymphocytes: types and roles
2009
Besides adipocytes, specialized in lipid handling and involved in energy balance regulation, white adipose tissue (WAT) is mainly composed of other cell types among which lymphocytes represent a non-negligible proportion. Different types of lymphocytes (B, alphabetaT, gammadeltaT, NK and NKT) have been detected in WAT of rodents or humans, and vary in their relative proportion according to the fat pad anatomical location. The lymphocytes found in intra-abdominal, visceral fat pads seem representative of innate immunity, while those present in subcutaneous fat depots are part of adaptive immunity, at least in mice. Both the number and the activity of the different lymphocyte classes, except …
Oxygen and substrate deprivation on isolated rat cardiac myocytes : temporal relationship between electromechanical and biochemical consequences
1990
The effects of hypoxia and reoxygenation on action potentials (AP), contractions, and certain biochemical parameters were studied in isolated rat ventricular myocytes in monolayer culture in the presence and absence of glucose. Substrate deprivation alone had no influence on the basal properties. In the presence of glucose, a 4-h hypoxic treatment caused only a moderate decrease in AP amplitude and rate. In substrate-free conditions, hypoxia induced a gradual decline in plateau potential level and in AP duration and rate, followed by rhythm abnormalities and a failure of the electromechanical coupling. Spontaneous AP generation then ceased, and the resting potential decreased with increase…
Radiation exposure in vascular angiographic procedures.
2012
Abstract Purpose To evaluate dose reduction in vascular angiographic procedures by using fluoroscopy capture instead of digital subtraction angiography frames for documentation. Materials and Methods A total of 764 consecutive vascular interventional procedures performed over a period of 1 year were retrospectively analyzed with respect to the fluoroscopy time and the resulting dose–area product (DAP), the DAP of the radiographic frames, and the overall DAP. Results A total of 70% of the total DAP was a result of the acquisition of radiographic frames, leaving only 30% being applied by fluoroscopy. Conclusions Fluoroscopy capture should be used for documentation whenever possible. A registr…
Differential regulation of interleukin-6 expression in human fibroblasts by tumor necrosis factor-alpha and lymphotoxin.
1990
The treatment of human diploid fibroblasts with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and with lymphotoxin (LT) is associated with induction of interleukin-6 (IL-6) transcripts with TNF-alpha being 10-fold more potent than LT. Here we report on the TNF-alpha/LT-induced signaling mechanisms responsible for the regulation of IL-6 gene expression in these cells. Run-on assays demonstrated that both TNF-alpha and LT increase IL-6 mRNA levels by transcriptional activation of this gene. Stability studies of IL-6 transcripts in fibroblasts showed that TNF-alpha delayed IL-6 mRNA decay but not LT. The induction of IL-6 transcripts by TNF-alpha and LT was not inhibited by the isoquinoline sulfonamide de…
Determination of renal tissue ibandronate levels in rats with normal and mildly impaired renal function
2013
After entering the blood, bisphosphonates are immediately bound to bone or excreted unchanged by the kidney. During renal excretion about 0.5% of administrated dosage remains in kidney tissue. The renal tissue level of bisphosphonates (RTL) decreases over time and remains at about 0.15% after 3weeks, but the influence of renal insufficiency (RI) is unclear. We investigated the influence of mild to moderate RI on RTL of ibandronate (IBD). First a method for determination of RTL was implemented and validated. We measured RTL in rats with normal renal function (SHAM) and after unilateral nephrectomy (UNX). In each case one SHAM and one UNX groups received one or alternatively 9 times every 3wee…
Patient and ophthalmologist attitudes concerning compliance and dosing in glaucoma treatment.
2005
The aim of this study was to identify research avenues that might improve patient compliance with glaucoma therapy.500 patients and physicians were interviewed by telephone in 5 European countries, and the results were compiled and evaluated by 2 independent physicians. Most physicians believed that pressure reduction is useful (UK (96%), France (94%), Spain (80%), Italy (72%), and Germany (70%), p0.0001). The majority of physicians believed that noncompliance exists in 0%-25% of patients, whereas 34% of patients admitted to noncompliance. Physicians believed patients would prefer once-daily dosing (92%) and that it would help compliance, whereas 60% of patients preferred once-daily dosing, …

The use of a new kind of low profile retractor for arteriovenous fistula procedure simplifies and speeds up the intervention
2009
Purpose The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of a new kind of disposable surgical retractor in arteriovenous fistula (AVF) procedures in order to achieve an easier, faster and safer surgical intervention. Methods Between January and June 2008, 22 AVF procedures were performed using the 3PAWS ReeTrakttrade; (Insightra Inc. - Irvine, Ca., USA) a self-retaining, low profile retractor. An equivalent patient sample, in which an AVF was performed using conventional retraction devices, was considered for comparison of the intra- and post-operative results. Results In all of the 22 AVF procedures performed, the ReeTrakt™ system has simplified the performance of the surgical te…
A score model for the continuous grading of early allograft dysfunction severity
2014
Early allograft dysfunction (EAD) dramatically influences graft and patient outcomes. A lack of consensus on an EAD definition hinders comparisons of liver transplant outcomes and management of recipients among and within centers. We sought to develop a model for the quantitative assessment of early allograft function [Model for Early Allograft Function Scoring (MEAF)] after transplantation. A retrospective study including 1026 consecutive liver transplants was performed for MEAF score development. Multivariate data analysis was used to select a small number of postoperative variables that adequately describe EAD. Then, the distribution of these variables was mathematically modeled to assig…
