Brain integrative function driven by musical training during real-world music listening

The present research investigated differences in the brain dynamics of continuous, real-world music listening between listeners with and without professional musical training, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A replication study was aimed at validating the reliability of the naturalistic approach to studying brain responses to music, wherein the brain signal and the acoustic information extracted from the musical stimulus were correlated. Although statins remain the cornerstone of lipid-lowering therapy for reducing the burden of atherosclerotic vascular disease, their administration has been associated with muscle-related adverse effects, including myalgia and rhabdomyolysis. Such adverse events are probably due to reduced antioxidant defenses associated with fewer intermediate metabolites in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. Statin therapy is generally well tolerated and very effective in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, regardless of cholesterol levels; however, it can be associated with various adverse events (myalgia, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, and diabetes mellitus, among others). Patients frequently discontinue statin therapy without medical advice because of perceived side effects and consequently increase their risk for cardiovascular events. Proteins in Amorphous Saccharides: Structural and Dynamical Insights on Bioprotection

We report on experimental and simulative insights on saccharide-based bioprotection, obtained through the study of proteins embedded in amorphous saccharide matrices. The data presented come from a complementary set of techniques (FTIR, MD simulations and SAXS), which provides a description of the bioprotection mechanism from the atomistic to the macroscopic level. The results concur to draw a picture in which bioprotection by saccharides can be explained in terms of a tight anchorage of the protein surface to a stiff matrix, via extended hydrogen-bond networks, whose properties are defined by all its components, and are strongly dependent on the water content. Bakalaura darbs ir uzrakstīts latviešu valodā uz 26 lapām. Darbs sastāv no ievada, teorētiskās un praktiskās daļas. Darbs satur 9 attēlus, 3 tabulas, 1 pielikumu un 31 atsauci uz literatūras avotiem. Darba mērķis: Izvērtēt mīksto mēneša kontaktlēcu materiālu nolietojuma ietekmi uz cilvēka redzes asumu un kontrastjutību. Metode un dalībnieki: Pētījumā piedalījās 15 cilvēki vecumā no 20 līdz 33 gadiem. Dalībniekiem tika novērtēta kontrastjutība un redzes asums kontaktlēcu lietošanas termiņa sākumā un beigās ar FrACT datorizētā testa palīdzību.
