Polysubstituted ferrocenes as tunable redox mediators

A series of four ferrocenyl ester compounds, 1-methoxycarbonyl- (1), 1,1’-bis(methoxycarbonyl)- (2), 1,1’,3-tris(methoxycarbonyl)- (3) and 1,1’,3,3’-tetrakis(methoxycarbonyl)ferrocene (4), has been studied with respect to their potential use as redox mediators. The impact of the number and position of ester groups present in 1–4 on the electrochemical potential E1/2 is correlated with the sum of Hammett constants. Diiminopyridyl metal complexes, first characterized several decades ago, found practical application in 1998 when they were used as precatalysts in coordinative ethylene polymerization. This discovery contributed to the so-called postmetallocene revolution and triggered the large-scale experimental and theoretical research aimed at understanding diversified diiminopyridine chemistry. The results of this quest, some of which were intriguing and difficult to anticipate, are discussed and summarized in the current Review.

The graphic analysis, as Giuseppe Pagnano stated with great clarity in 1975, allows us to fully explore aspects that verbal language can only touch; it does not make us re-discover the rules of architecture but, as every critical operation, makes us understand which rules the architect used and above all it makes us understand why he formulated certain solutions rather than others. The drawing is a knowledge process hat intervenes both on the field of project making and processing, and on that of interpretation and critical analysis of the work. The redrawing of Église pour Bologne wants to reconstruct the path that those ‘eyes’ had seen to fornent knowledge of an architecture of which remain few graphics clues.

Three-port colectomy: reduced port laparoscopy for general surgeons. A single center experience

To evaluate three-port colectomy as an alternative reduced-port laparoscopy technique in colonic surgery.Retrospective study carried out through the analysis of 32 consecutive patients that underwent alternatively to a three ports left colectomy or a conventional laparoscopic colectomy for colonic diseases in order to evaluate the benefits of the reduced-port technique. A multivariate analysis among duration of surgery, hospital stay and conversion rate was performed using the OLS regression and the binary logistic regression.We found a reduced operative time in the three-port colectomy in comparison to the four-port technique (p=0.07).
