The apparent losses due to metering errors: a proactive approach to predict losses and schedule maintenance

2014

The effects of water meter age and private tanks on the apparent losses due to metering errors were evaluated by experimental and theoretical analyses. A monitoring campaign on a small district metered area (DMA) was carried out to determine the causes of apparent losses and implement a numerical model. Metering errors are affected by the flow rate passing through the meter, which is dependent on the network pressure and water level of the private tank. A node model that reproduces the effect of private tanks was coupled with EPANET and was applied to the DMA. The proposed modelling approach was used to identify where apparent losses are higher and to schedule maintenance. The model predict…

Pneumatic press equipped with the Vortex system for white grapes processing: First results

2019

The interaction between mechanical, computer and electronic technologies offers nowadays highly innovative solutions to be applied to the oenological machinery industry. Grapes pressing for the extraction of must from the grapes has a fundamental role for obtaining wines with high quality. The pneumatic presses commonly used work with a discontinuous cycle, taking on average about 3 hours for the extraction of the juice from the grapes. During this period, the presence of oxygen in contact with grapes can modify the qualitative characteristics of the future wine. The aim of the research was to study the “Vortex System” applied to a pneumatic press and to evaluate the quality of wines obtain…

A proposal for improving the elastic behaviour of dogbone

2022

The Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connections are one of the prequalified connections approved by international standards and adopted to improve the seismic behaviour of steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRF) also protecting the joint between beams and columns. This goal is reached by locally reducing the resistance of a selected portion of the beam element by suitably trimming the flanges, to promote in that portion the onset of plastic deformations. In the framework of RBS, the most important typology proposed is the so-called dogbone (DB) connections that are widely diffused in seismic engineering. The essential advantages of DB are related to the protection of the welded cross section between…

DOPAMINE ELECTROCHEMICAL SENSOR BASED ON REDUCED GRAPHENE OXIDE AND METAL NANOPARTICLES

2019

Dopamine (DA) is one of the most important neurotransmitters released from the brain, and is involved in many different biological processes. This neurotransmitter influences the processes that involve memory, sleep, mood, learning, and so on. Besides, in the last years, dopamine concentration in human body fluids has been related to some neurodegenerative pathologies, such as Parkinson and Alzheimer’s diseases [1]. It is well known that these pathologies are due to the formation of amyloids plaques that block part of the brain. Many literature data reports that DAergic neurons (areas of midbrain where DA is synthesized) shows a different activity when amyloid plaques are present with a con…

Phosphate ions detection by using an electrochemical sensor based on laser-scribed graphene oxide on paper

2023

In this work, electrodes based on laser-scribed reduced graphene oxide were fabricated using filter paper as the substrate. To fabricate the electrodes, a water suspension of graphene oxide was filtered to produce a continuous and uniform film of graphene oxide on the filter paper surface. Subsequently, a CO2 laser was used to "write" the working, counter and reference eelctroes by reducing graphene oxide in specific areas to define complete sensors. Referecnce electrodes were then coated with a commercial Ag/AgCl conductive paste to produce a quasi Ag/AgCl reference. As fabricated devices were employed as electrochemical sensors for detection of phosphate ions in water by employing the mol…

Nanostructured Lead Electrodes with Reduced Graphene Oxide for High-Performance Lead–Acid Batteries

2022

Nanostructured Pb electrodes consisting of nanowire arrays were obtained by electrodeposition, to be used as negative electrodes for lead–acid batteries. Reduced graphene oxide was added to improve their performances. This was achieved via the electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide directly on the surface of nanowire arrays. The electrodes with and without reduced graphene oxide were tested in a 5 M sulfuric acid solution using a commercial pasted positive plate and an absorbed glass mat separator in a zero-gap configuration. The electrodes were tested in deep cycling conditions with a very low cut-off potential. Charge–discharge tests were performed at 5C. The electrode wi…

Reduced Complexity Models in the Identifi cation of Dynamical Networks: links with sparsi cation problems.

2009

In many applicative scenarios it is important to derive information about the topology and the internal connections of more dynamical systems interacting together. Examples can be found in fields as diverse as Economics, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. The paper deals with the problem of deriving a descriptive model of a network, collecting the node outputs as time series with no use of a priori insight on the topology. We cast the problem as the optimization of a cost function operating a trade-off between accuracy and complexity in the final model. We address the problem of reducing the complexity by fixing a certain degree of sparsity, and trying to find the solution that ``better'' satis…

Settore IUS/07 - Diritto Del LavoroThe essay analyzes recent measures to reduce the cost of labor in the public sector in the light of several judgments on the topic. The economic crisis is always present in the legal reasoning of the judges. The litigation rate increases and the judicial power must assess the legitimacy of the choices of public administration and the judicial reaction of public workers in an attempt to recover in whole or in part the remuneration quotas lost (or not adequate during the time).

Rheological studies of moderately concentrated polystyrene solutions. I. A new method for the extrapolation of the zero-shear viscosity

1983

Measurements of the viscosity coefficient η of solutions of polystyrene (Mw = 6.0 × 105 and 1.77 × 106) in trans-decalin (TD, θ solvent) and toluene (TL, good solvent) as function of shear rate (11−104 s−1), concentration (4.24−11.21 wt %), and temperature (10–50°C) are reported. As a new theoretically grounded method for the determination of the zero-shear viscosity η0 it is proposed to plot η as a function of . The intercepts of the straight lines obtained by this procedure give η0 in good agreement with directly measured values.
