Combination of indomethacin and statin compared with indomethacin and placebo in patients with a first episode of acute pericarditis: preliminary fin…

2007

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the combination of indomethacin and statin compared with indomethacin plus placebo in patients with a first episode of pericarditis. A total of 55 consecutive patients with acute pericarditis were randomized in a double-blind manner into two groups: group I (statin group) was treated with 150 mg of indomethacin plus 10 mg of rosuvastatin, and group 2 (placebo group) was treated with 150 mg of indomethacin plus placebo. Both groups received treatment up to the normalization of inflammation markers and for the following week. Clinical and laboratory assessments [white cell count, ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and C…

Superficial thrombophlebitis in varicose vein disease: the particular role of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase.

2010

Background The purpose of this study was to compare the genetic background of superficial (SVT) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Methods Factor V (FV)-Leiden (G16891A)-, factor II(G20210A)-mutations, protein C- and S, as well as methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms at C677T and A1298C, and serum homocysteine levels (hcy) were determined in 29 patients with SVT and 26 with DVT. Findings FV- and –II-mutations were less frequent in patients with SVT (2/3) compared with DVT (9/5), respectively ( P < 0.002 in case of FV). However, the frequency of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism was significantly higher in patients with SVT compared with DVT (CT 12 versus 10, and TT 7 versus …

Lipid metabolism during exercise I: Physiological and biochemical characterization of normal healthy male subjects in relation to their physical fitn…

1978

On the basis of maximal oxygen uptake (\(\dot V\)O2 max) 18 normal, healthy men were divided into two groups of equal size: moderately trained subjects (MTR) each having \(\dot V\)O2 max below 65.0 ml·min−1·kg−1 body weight (54.0±8.3) and well trained subjects (WTR), whose \(\dot V\)O2 max exceeded 65.0 ml·min−1·kg−1 body weight (69.2±4.1). The WTR group had slightly (non significant, n.s.) higher percentage of slow twitch, oxidative (SO) fibers in M. vastus lateralis and higher (n.s.) activities of cytochrome c oxidase (CytOx), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (HADH), and citrate synthase (CS), while lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was lower (n.s.). In th…

Association of simvastatin and hyperlipidemia with periodontal status and bone metabolism markers.

2014

Background: The objective of this study is to determine whether simvastatin consumption and hyperlipidemia are associated with a worse periodontal condition and specific bone activity biomarkers. Methods: This cross-sectional and analytic study includes 73 patients divided into three groups: 1) simvastatin-treated patients with hyperlipidemia (n = 29); 2) patients with hyperlipidemia treated by diet alone (n = 28); and 3) normolipidemic patients (controls, n = 16). The periodontal clinical variables of all participants were gathered, a blood sample was drawn from each to determine the lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein), se…

Cataracts and statins. A disproportionality analysis using data from VigiBase.

2019

The basis of the association between statin use and cataract has been explored using the World Health Organization (WHO) global database of individual case safety reports (ICSRs) for drug monitoring (VigiBase) through January 2019. The reporting odds ratios (RORs) as a measure of disproportionality for reported cataracts and individual statins have been calculated. Subgroup analyses according statin lipophilicity, sex, and age groups have been performed. Moreover, RORs have been calculated for non-statin lipid lowering drugs. An increased disproportionality have been found for most individual statins lovastatin: [ROR: 14.80, 95% confidence interval (CI): 13.30, 16.46)], atorvastatin (ROR: 3…

Enzyme activities and glycogen concentration in skeletal muscle in alcoholism. The effect of abstinence and physical conditioning.

1974

. Muscle metabolism of chronic alcoholics has been studied using a muscle biopsy technique immediately after a drinking period, after 6–7 days' abstinence and after one month's physical conditioning. The activities of CPK, HK, LDH, MDH and SDH were significantly decreased in musculus vastus lateralis for 1–2 days after an alcoholic debauch. The enzyme activities of the alcoholics, who either had been abstinent for 6–7 days or in addition conditioned for one month, did not differ from those of the controls. The concentration of muscle glycogen was at the same level in both groups, but in bicycle ergometer work of an equal relative intensity the alcoholics used more glycogen than the control …

Statin therapy and plasma coenzyme Q10 concentrations—A systematic review and meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials

2015

Statin therapy may lower plasma coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) concentrations, but the evidence as to the significance of this effect is unclear. We assessed the impact of statin therapy on plasma CoQ10 concentrations through the meta-analysis of available RCTs. The literature search included selected databases up to April 30, 2015. The meta-analysis was performed using either a fixed-effects or random-effect model according to I(2) statistic. Effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The data from 8 placebo-controlled treatment arms suggested a significant reduction in plasma CoQ10 concentrations following treatment with statins (WMD: -0.44 μmol/…

PCOS: metabolic impact and long-term management.

2012

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent endocrinopathy in women, affecting up to 10% of those in reproductive age. Furthermore, PCOS presents a lifetime risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS have increased cardiovascular risk; however, the risk is not the same in all patients and it is necessary to assess an individual risk profile. There is a discrepancy between increased cardiovascular risk at young age and postmenopausal number of cardiovascular events, probablu depending on changes in androgen ovarian function after the forties. However, changes with age of metabolic profile in women with PCOS have not been studied yet an…

Anaerobic threshold, skeletal muscle enzymes and fiber composition in young female cross-country skiers.

1980

Anaerobic threshold (AT) and maximum oxygen uptake (max VO2) were determined in 15 young female cross-country skiers, aged 15--20 years, during incremental bycycle ergometer exercise. Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), citrate synthase (CS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were analyzed biochemically and percentage of slow twitch fibres (%ST fibres, myosin adenosine triphosphatase staining) histochemically in muscle samples obtained from m. vastus lateralis. Max VO2 correlated significantly with anaerobic threshold in ml x kg-1 x min-1 (mlAT) but when AT was expressed in percent of max VO2 (%AT) the correlation was insignificant. Significant correlations were found be…

Treatment of hyperandrogenic alopecia in women

2003

Many women with androgenic alopecia have normal circulating androgen levels. Increased scalp sensitivity to androgens may account for these cases. Even when androgen levels are increased, no particular pattern has emerged. Classical anti-androgen measures have proved disappointing, in contrast to the results obtained in women with hirsutism or acne. This study evaluated flutamide and finasteride in 36 premenopausal, hyperandrogenic women presenting with androgenic alopecia. Frontal hair thinning was assessed in photos of the frontoparietal region using the Ludwig grading system. Thirty ovulatory women matched for age and body weight served as a control group. Groups of 12 subjects received …
