One-year atorvastatin treatment in hypercholesterolemic patients with or without carotid artery disease.

Aim. Statins are the drugs of choice in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), which has a high risk of premature cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction, stroke, and surgical revascularization. Methods. A 1-year open-label study was conducted to test the efficacy and tolerability of Atorvastatin titrated to the target, in proven FH patients and to evaluate certain inflammatory parameters. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of a novel inhibitor of microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 expression

Abstract In a previous study, we reported a new γ-hydroxybutenolide derivative, 4-benzo[ b ]thiophen-2-yl-3-bromo-5-hydroxy-5 H -furan-2-one (BTH), as inhibitor of microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) expression in lypopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated RAW 264.7 and TPH-1 cells, without affecting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). In this study, we evaluated the in vivo effect of BTH on some acute and chronic inflammatory animal models in relation to its inhibitory profile on mPGES-1 expression. Buerger`s Disease and Hyperhomocysteinemia: Is there a Relationship?

Thromboangiitis obliterans, also known as Buerger's disease, is a cause of juvenile lower limb ischaemia. Buerger's disease is idiopathic and one of diagnostic criteria is the absence of atherosclerotic risk factors other than smok- ing. A possible involvement of thrombophilia has been investigated and the role of hyperhomocysteinemia is still matter of discussion. We describe 9 patients with Buerger's disease followed-up for the past 3 years. We found a significant in- crease in circulating homocysteine levels (mean: 31.6 in patients vs 8.2 μmol/L in control subjects). Carbonyl reductase 1 is a predominant doxorubicin reductase in the human liver.

A first step in the enzymatic disposition of the antineoplastic drug doxorubicin (DOX) is the reduction to doxorubicinol (DOX-OL). Because DOX-OL is less antineoplastic but more cardiotoxic than the parent compound, the individual rate of this reaction may affect the antitumor effect and the risk of DOX-induced heart failure. Using purified enzymes and human tissues we determined enzymes generating DOX-OL and interindividual differences in their activities. Human tissues express at least two DOX-reducing enzymes. Statin intolerance – an attempt at a unified definition. Position paper from an International Lipid Expert Panel

Statins are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in clinical practice. They are usually well tolerated and effectively prevent cardiovascular events. Most adverse effects associated with statin therapy are muscle-related. The recent statement of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) has focused on statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS), and avoided the use of the term 'statin intolerance'. Pulse EPR methods for studying chemical and biological samples containing transition metals

This review discusses the application of pulse EPR to the characterization of disordered systems, with an emphasis on samples containing transition metals. Electron nuclear double-resonance (ENDOR), electron-spin-echo envelope-modulation (ESEEM), and double electron-electron resonance (DEER) methodologies are outlined. The theory of field modulation is outlined, and its application is illustrated with DEER experiments. The simulation of powder spectra in EPR is discussed, and strategies for optimization are given. Abstract Catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were measured together with cadmium (Cd) toxicity and accumulation in newly molted adults of Oncopeltus fasciatus (Dallas) exposed to the metal in drinking water. Insects were provided with either 200 or 20 mg Cd/liter (96-h LC30 and LC10, respectively) or with tap water for 1, 3, 5, and 7 d.
