We investigated the prevalence of Parkinson's disease and other types of parkinsonism in a Sicilian population using a door-to-door two-phase approach. This design called for the administration of a brief screening instrument to all subjects who, on November 1, 1987, were residents of Terrasini (Palermo Province), Santa Teresa di Riva (Messina Province), and Riposto (Catania Province), Sicily (N = 24,496). Study neurologists using specified diagnostic criteria extensively investigated those subjects who screened positive. OBJECTIVES: To study the prognostic impact of muscularis mucosae (MM) invasion for pT1 bladder cancer treated by transurethral resection (TUR) and adjuvant Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) intravesical immunotherapy. METHODS: Sixty-six patients treated by BCG intravesical instillations were substaged into pT1a and pT1b, regarding Muscularis Mucosae invasion. Prevalence of diabetic neuropathy with somatic symptoms

In a door-to-door survey conducted in two municipalities of Sicily, we ascertained the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy. Our case-finding was restricted to subjects with somatic symptoms. During phase 1, we administered a screening instrument for peripheral neuropathy to 14,540 persons residing in Santa Teresa di Riva (Messina Province) and Terrasini (Palermo Province). During phase 2, neurologists evaluated those subjects who had screened positive. Diagnoses were based on clinical criteria only, and were reviewed by an adjudication panel. Should We Screen for <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> to Prevent Gastric Cancer?

Although the strategy for <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> infection management is well defined and quite well followed in a number of situations, including peptic ulcer disease, the issue of <i>H. pylori</i> screening and eradication in the general population still remains. The following debate attempts to find the answer of whether or not <i>H. pylori</i> screening should be performed in the asymptomatic population for preventing gastric cancer. As yet, there is no final evidence-based consensus about the need to screen for <i>H. pylori</i> in order to decrease the incidence of gastric cancer.

Sonography and computed tomography in the diagnosis of orbitocranial malformations and tumors

Standardized sonography and CT scanning have distinct advantages and disadvantages in the evaluation of patients with orbital diseases. Echography provides an efficient screening examination in patients presenting with signs and symptoms of orbital pathology. It allows the detection, localization, measurement and in almost 80% differentiation of orbital lesions. High resolution CT scanning gives an excellent topographic display of masses in the orbit. In visualization of intracranial causes of orbital processes and demonstration of changes in the posterior third of the orbit, in the orbital bones and the periorbital sinuses it is superior to ultrasonography.

Aim To evaluate the clinical utility of automated refraction (AR) and keratometry (KR) compared with subjective or manifest refraction (MR) after cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery with implantation of Lentis Mplus X (Oculentis GmbH) refractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). Methods Eighty-six eyes implanted with the Lentis Mplus X multifocal IOL were included. Tree Species Identification Using 3D Spectral Data and 3D Convolutional Neural Network

In this study we apply 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) for tree species identification. Study includes the three most common Finnish tree species. Study uses a relatively large high-resolution spectral data set, which contains also a digital surface model for the trees. Data has been gathered using an unmanned aerial vehicle, a framing hyperspectral imager and a regular RGB camera.
