Subsurface nitrate reduction under wetlands takes place in narrow superficial zones
2017
This study aims to investigate the depth distribution of the Nitrate Reduction Potential (NRP) on a natural and a re-established wetland. The obtained NRP provides a valuable data of the driving factors affecting denitrification, the Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction to Ammonium (DNRA) process and the performance of a re-established wetland. Intact soil cores were collected and divided in slices for the determination of Organic Matter (OM) through Loss of Ignition (LOI) as well as Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and NRP spiking nitrate in batch tests. The Nitrate Reduction (NR) was fitted as a pseudo-first order rate constant (k) from where NRPs were obtained. NR took place in a narrow superfi…
Adiabatic Elimination and Sub-space Evolution of Open Quantum Systems
2020
Efficient descriptions of open quantum systems can be obtained by performing an adiabatic elimination of the fast degrees of freedom and formulating effective operators for the slow degrees of freedom in reduced dimensions. Here, we perform the construction of effective operators in frequency space, and using the final value theorem or alternatively the Keldysh theorem, we provide a correction for the trace of the density matrix which takes into account the non trace-preserving character of the evolution. We illustrate our results with two different systems, ones where the eliminated fast subspace is constituted by a continuous set of states and ones with discrete states. Furthermore, we sh…
Monitoring Results and Energy Performances Evaluation of Freescoo Solar DEC Systems
2016
Abstract This work addresses the energy saving performances of some solar Desiccant and Evaporative Cooling (DEC) systems working with the freescoo technology. The innovative freescoo concept is based on the use two fixed and cooled adsorption beds and advanced indirect evaporative cooling processes. The main feature of this new adsorption bed concept is to allow the simultaneous dehumidification and cooling of air. The systems analyzed have been installed in Italy last here and results based on field monitoring data are here presented. A description of the monitored systems and comparisons between the energy performances based on the main performance indicators such as EER, thermal COP, co…
Second Generation of Freescoo Solar DEC Prototypes for Residential Applications
2015
Freescoo is an innovative all-in-one compact solar Desiccant Evaporative Cooling (DEC) air conditioner concept. Results of the first prototype developed were presented at SHC Conference last year. Now a second generation of freescoo prototypes for applications in residential and small office buildings have been installed in Italy at ENEA Casaccia and at UNIPA. The thermodynamic cycle is based on the use of fixed and cooled adsorption beds and advanced evaporative cooling concepts. The adsorption bed, which is a fin and tube heat exchanger packed with silica gel grains, allows simultaneous dehumidification and cooling of the process air. The indirect evaporative cooling process, operated dow…
Development and Optimization of Pre-Concentration Procedure of Rare-Earth Elements (REEs) in Their Minerals, Using Microwave - Assisted Sample Dissol…
2015
Abstract The aim of this research was to develop and optimize a procedure for determination of REEs in xenotime and monazite samples collected from Bangka Island, which were compared to Standard Monazite (71 AG) of Bureau of Analyzed Samples, London. ICP-OES method was used for the determination. The samples were dried and sterilized by heating for a week at 110 °C, before digesting with nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid, using a microwave-assisted digestion system. After a careful line selection, at the detection limits for all REEs in the ng/mL the REEs were reliably obtained at the 0.09 – 38% level.
Evolution of structural and electronic properties of TiSe2 under high pressure
2021
A pressure-induced structural phase transition and its intimate link with the superconducting transition was studied for the first time in TiSe2 up to 40 GPa at room temperature using X-ray diffraction, transport measurement, and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate the occurrence of a first-order structural phase transition at 4 GPa from the standard trigonal structure (S.G.P3¯m1) to another trigonal structure (S-G-P3¯c1). Additionally, at 16 GPa, the P3¯c1 phase spontaneously transforms into a monoclinic C2/m phase, and above 24 GPa, the C2/m phase returns to the initial P3¯m1 phase. Electrical transport results show that metallization occurs above 6 GPa. The charge density wave …
Colossal barocaloric effects in the complex hydride Li$_{2}$B$_{12}$H$_{12}$
2021
Traditional refrigeration technologies based on compression cycles of greenhouse gases pose serious threats to the environment and cannot be downscaled to electronic device dimensions. Solid-state cooling exploits the thermal response of caloric materials to external fields and represents a promising alternative to current refrigeration methods. However, most of the caloric materials known to date present relatively small adiabatic temperature changes ($|\Delta T| \sim 1$ K) and/or limiting irreversibility issues resulting from significant phase-transition hysteresis. Here, we predict the existence of colossal barocaloric effects (isothermal entropy changes of $|\Delta S| \sim 100$ JK$^{-1}…
Competition between inter- and intra- molecular energy exchanges in a simple quantum model of a dimer
2006
Abstract We propose a fully quantum model to describe the dynamics of a possible radiationless energy transfer process between identical and nearly localized molecules or monomers coupled through a dipole–dipole term. The system is studied as an environmentally isolated dimeric pair and we find that its dynamics exhibits a competition between the process ruling out the transfer of energy among different degrees of freedom of a given monomer and the one steering the intermolecular passage of excitations from a monomer to the other one. Such a competition is quantitatively characterized investigating on the temporal behaviour of quantum covariances of some couples of appropriate observables h…
On the listing and random generation of hybrid binary trees
1994
We consider in this paper binary trees whose internal nodes are either associative or non-associative. Hybrid binary trees are equivalence classes with respect to the associative property. We count, list and generate randomly hybrid binary trees using Fibonacci numbers.
