Selective Band Gap to Suppress the Spurious Acoustic Mode in Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator Structures

In this work, we investigate numerically the propagation of Lamb waves in a film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) structure formed by piezoelectric ZnO layer sandwiched between two Mo electrodes coupled with Bragg reflectors; the system is thus considered as a phononic-crystal (PnC) plate. The aim is to suppress the first-order symmetric Lamb wave mode considered as a spurious mode caused by the establishment of a lateral standing wave due to the reflection at the embedded lateral extremities of the structure; this spurious mode is superposing to the main longitudinal mode resonance of the FBAR. Determination of refractive index of submicron-thick films using resonance shift in a four-layer slab waveguide

The measurement of refractive index of very thin films at the order of ten to hundred nanometers is cumbersome and usually requires employing sophisticated techniques such as the spectral ellipsometry. In this paper we describe a simple contact method for measuring the refractive index of thin films. Here we have used the prism-coupling technique for characterizing samples prepared as four-layer slab waveguides. The waveguide resonance condition can be calculated by solving simple analytic transcendental equations for the slab waveguide. State-space formulation of scalar Preisach hysteresis model for rapid computation in time domain

2015

A state-space formulation of classical scalar Preisach model (CSPM) of hysteresis is proposed. The introduced state dynamics and memory interface allow to use the state equation, which is rapid in calculation, instead of the original Preisach equation. The main benefit of the proposed modeling approach is the reduced computational effort which requires only a single integration over the instantaneous line segment in the Preisach plane. Numerical evaluations of the computation time and model accuracy are provided in comparison to the CSPM which is taken as a reference model.

The Acoustic Wave Behavior Within the PEA Cell for Space Charge Measurement

In order to evaluate the acoustic wave behavior within the Pulsed Electro Acoustic (PEA) cell, a simulation model has been developed in this work. The model, implemented in Matlab environment, is based on the analogy between acoustic and electrical quantities. Therefore, it was possible to model the PEA cell as cascade connected lossy transmission lines. The model has been validated theoretically by making a comparison with a simulation result found in literature. Topological two-dimensional Su–Schrieffer–Heeger analog acoustic networks: Total reflection at corners and corner induced modes

In this work, we investigate some aspects of an acoustic analogue of the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The system is composed of alternating cross-section tubes connected in a square network, which in the limit of narrow tubes is described by a discrete model coinciding with the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. This model is known to host topological edge waves, and we develop a scattering theory to analyze how these waves scatter on edge structure changes. We show that these edge waves undergo a perfect reflection when scattering on a corner, incidentally leading to a new way of constructing corner modes. Real space observation of two-dimensional Bloch wave interferences in a negative index photonic crystal cavity

We report here the direct observation of two-dimensional (2D) Bloch wave interferences in a negative index photonic crystal by using optical near-field microscopy techniques. The photonic crystal is formed by a defectless honeycomb lattice of air holes etched in III-V semiconductor slab. A scanning near-field optical microscope is used to visualize spatially, as well as spectrally, the light distribution inside the photonic crystal. The recorded near-field spectra and maps presented here unambiguously demonstrate the Bloch wave interferences within the photonic crystal. Refractive index controlled by film morphology and free carrier density in undoped ZnO through sol-pH variation

Abstract Zinc oxide thin films, prepared by the sol-gel process, were deposited on glass substrate using spin coating technique. The sol-pH effect on the optical parameters was studied for alkaline sol. The surface roughness was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and varied from 20 to 40 nm. The optical transmission measurements were carried out to evaluate the behavior of the extinction coefficient and the refractive index. An exponential decay of the refractive index ‘n’ as a function of wavelength was observed. The refractive index increases slightly when the pH increases to pH = 9.5 where it reaches its maximum. The PEA method is the most used technique for the space charge measurements. As is well known, this method uses pressure waves to detect the charges accumulated in solid dielectrics. Based on its working principle, the generated acoustic waves travel within PEA cell and the specimen under test in order to be finally detected by the piezoelectric sensor. For a multilayer specimen and, in particular, in case of different materials that make up the specimen, the acoustic wave reflection is inevitable.
