New Materialist Explorations into Language Education
2023
This open access book analyzes language education through a socio-material framework. The authors revisit their position as researchers by decentering themselves and humans in general from the main focus of research activities and giving way to the materialities that are agentive but often overlooked parts of our research contexts and processes. Through this critical posthumanist realism, they are able to engage in research that sees society as an ethical interrelationship between humans and the material world and explore the socio-materialities of language education from the perspectives of material agency, spatial and embodied materiality, and human and non-human assemblages. Each chapter…
The Roadmap to Finnish Open Science and Research
2015
Finland published its open science roadmap at the end of November 2014. This roadmap is based on the work of the Open Science and Research Initiative (ATT), a cross-administrative initiative established by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The goal of this initiative is to promote open science and availability of information. Exploration of recent developments of open access in the EU shows that Finland is not among the leading countries in the EU. This paper focuses on the practical action plan of this roadmap and describes how the weakest part of Finnish open science, green open access is to be lifted at international top level.
Appropriateness of surgery performed for abdominal aortic aneurysm at tertiary hospitals in Spain
2021
Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the appropriateness of the type of repair (open or endovascular) performed for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in five university hospitals in Spain, according to evidence-based recommendations. Methods: A multicenter, retrospective cross-sectional study of patients with AAA who underwent elective open surgical repair (OSR) or endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Reframing Teacher Education: Towards the Integration of Phenomenon-Based Curriculum Reform and Organizational Culture
2021
In this article, we report a case study of our experiences of a curriculum reform process based on the principles of phenomenon-based learning in higher education in the context of Finnish teacher education. We explore how democracy and participation were present in the decision making process, highlighting the challenges of promoting the phenomenon-based approach and collaboration. First, we describe the reform’s rationale, then the theoretical framework, methodology and the reform process. Next, we reflect on our experiences through documen tary and interview data. The change process included representative and participative democ racy approaches as well as an aristocratic approach. An in…

Opening up learning environments : liking school among students in reformed learning spaces
2022
The present study focuses on views of Finnish basic education students on open and flexible learning environments and the extent to which these views are associated with students’ liking of school. The data were based on an online questionnaire containing both structured ratings and open-ended questions filled out by primary school students (n = 684; grades 2–6; between ages 8–13 years) attending reformed learning environments. Ethnographic field notes and photographs of the schools were collected to provide contextual information about the settings. Quantitative analyses indicated that students had mostly positive evaluations of their renewed learning environments. Students’ perception of …

Marin ohjaajuuden ulottuvuudet : fenomenologis-hermeneuttinen tutkimus erään lukion opinto-ohjaajan ohjaajuudesta
2012
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tarkastella opinto-ohjaajan ohjaukseen liittyviä kokemuksia ja selvittää, minkälaisten merkitysten pohjalta hän toimii. Tutkimustehtävänä on selvittää, miten opinto-ohjaaja kokee oman ohjaajuutensa keskeisimmät ulottuvuudet. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadullinen tapaustutkimus, jossa syvennytään yhden opinto-ohjaajan ohjaajuuteen. Tutkimusta lähestytään fenomenologis-hermeneuttisesta näkökulmasta. Fenomenologiassa tutkitaan yksilön kokemuksissa esiin tulevia merkitysrakenteita, ja hermeneutiikassa tulkitaan haastateltavan ilmaisuja kokemuksista. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty hyödyntämällä stimulated recall -menetelmää, jossa haastattelun tukena on käytetty videonauha…
