Building renovation, sustainability and urban regeneration

2015

The paper investigates issues related to the principles of eco-sustainability and criteria of de-sign choice to be made in respect to the characteristics of the interventions. It proposes cases of recovery and re-use sustainable in Sicily, whose choices of action were made in respect of the environment and local traditions. General directives: reduction of the energy consump-tion; use of recycled and recyclable materials;improvement of the thermo/igrometric. The programming is based not only on the control of the performance, but on an idea of global quality of the operations. The correspondence between the needs and the requirements of the organism and the norms that protect the user, it’s…

Proposte per una rigenerazione urbana ed ecologica

2022

Starting from the definitions of resilience, this paper considers the urgent need for a trans-scalar and transdisciplinary approach to mitigate the errors of the past and to prevent the effects of global climate change. At an urban scale, vegetation performs ecosystem services aimed at urban resilience, thus contributing to increasing the quality of life. It reflected on the results of planning choices made in the past following natural events and we know that today are much worse than the events themselves. Through a case study, the paper illustrates some solutions for urban regeneration that looks at the ecological-environmental component.

Functional outcomes of peripheral nerve repair and regeneration: clinical and experimental study

This study investigated pre- and post-operative evaluation of peripheral nerve injuries and functional outcomes of peripheral nerve regeneration after different type of injuries and different type of treatments. Neuromas/scar neuritis and brachial plexus injuries are specifically addressed; literature and experimental evidence on the outcomes of vascularized nerve grafts are presented.

Zinc Adsorption by Activated Carbon Prepared from Lignocellulosic Waste Biomass

2019

Sawdust was used as a precursor for the production of biomass-based activated carbon. Carbonization and activation are single-stage processes, and steam was used as a physical activation agent at 800 &deg

Advantages of Hyaluronic Acid and Its Combination with Other Bioactive Ingredients in Cosmeceuticals

2021

This study proposes a review on hyaluronic acid (HA) known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate and its derivates and their application in cosmetic formulations. HA is a glycosaminoglycan constituted from two disaccharides (N-acetylglucosamine and D-glucuronic acid), isolated initially from the vitreous humour of the eye, and subsequently discovered in different tissues or fluids (especially in the articular cartilage and the synovial fluid). It is ubiquitous in vertebrates, including humans, and it is involved in diverse biological processes, such as cell differentiation, embryological development, inflammation, wound healing, etc. HA has many qualities that recommend it over other substances used…

Skin Immunomodulation during Regeneration: Emerging New Targets

2021

Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) are present within the hypodermis and are also expected to play a pivotal role in wound healing, immunomodulation, and rejuvenation activities. They orchestrate, through their exosome, the mechanisms associated to cell differentiation, proliferation, and cell migration by upregulating genes implicated in different functions including skin barrier, immunomodulation, cell proliferation, and epidermal regeneration. ADSCs directly interact with their microenvironment and specifically the immune cells, including macrophages and T and B cells, resulting in differential inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms impacting, in return, ADSCs microenvironment and …

Hopes and Limits of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs) and Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) in Wound Healing

2020

Adipose tissue derived stem cells (ADSCs) are mesenchymal stem cells identified within subcutaneous tissue at the base of the hair follicle (dermal papilla cells), in the dermal sheets (dermal sheet cells), in interfollicular dermis, and in the hypodermis tissue. These cells are expected to play a major role in regulating skin regeneration and aging-associated morphologic disgraces and structural deficits. ADSCs are known to proliferate and differentiate into skin cells to repair damaged or dead cells, but also act by an autocrine and paracrine pathway to activate cell regeneration and the healing process. During wound healing, ADSCs have a great ability in migration to be recruited rapidly…

Modelli e approcci innovativi di restauro urbano e architettonico

2016

The essay proposes a contribution, from within the discipline of restoration, but at the same time open to interdisciplinarity, on operations in new territorial areas - peripheries, degraded centers. Restoration has the possibility of influencing them, nurturing new perspectives based on an ethical dimension, aimed at safeguarding - in the processes of regeneration - values such as the promotion of the person, the cultural dimension of development, the quality of life. The reflection engages on two concrete experiences of research and third mission operated on the Palermo outskirts of Brancaccio and on the town of Favara, in the province of Agrigento.

Collective participation for the sustainable redevelopment of degraded environments and urban public space

2022

The use of participatory processes as useful tools for the regeneration of the built environment is urgently topical, also in view of the inclusive forms of decision-making that have been introduced for years by ministerial and European standards. The research is part of a well-structured cultural and regulatory context characterised by new and interesting experiments in the field. Studying the participatory process as a useful strategy for conflict management and for the construction of new regenerative models in fact also implies a clarification of "what is meant by participation and the participatory project. At the same time, as widely testified to by the production of manuals in recent…
