Infrastructures and Productivity in the Spanish Regions
1996
The aim of this paper is to analyse the role of public capital, the types of infrastructures in which it is invested, and their territorial distribution in the gains in productivity of the private sector in the Spanish regions in the period 1964-1991 using panel data techniques to control for unobserved state-specific characteristics. The results obtained show how the infrastructures most directly linked to the productive process present a significant and positive effect on productivity. They also show the importance of the network effect of the infrastructures of a productive nature as well as a decrease in the elasticity associated with such infrastructures as development progresses. A World Full of Mergers: The Nordic Countries in a Global Context
2016
In this introductory chapter to the volume, the editors present the findings from a literature review undertaken on the topic, and link classical organizational perspectives to the study of merger processes involving higher education institutions. The chapter provides a brief overview of developments across Nordic higher education by referring to Burton Clark’s famous ‘triangle of coordination’. The authors conclude by sketching out the rationale and aim of the comparative study, the ways in which the volume is organized and by providing a short summary of its individual contributions.
LATVIAN INNOVATION ACTIVITY AND PERSPECTIVES IN THE EU CONTEXT
2013
The new Europe 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth has identified innovation as one of the core drivers that can get European countries out of the current economic crisis. The Europe 2020 Strategy sets a 3% of the EU’s GDP to be invested in RD the statistics database of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia; Eurostat and other international statistical and methodological materials. Bibliography review, as well as methods of statistical analysis such as grouping, processing and comparative analysis has mainly been used in the paper.
Spanish geographers works and the evolution of the geographical
2005
Solar UV-B radiation affects leaf quality and insect herbivory in the southern beech tree Nothofagus antarctica
2004
We examined the effects of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on plant-insect interactions in Tierra del Fuego (55°S), Argentina, an area strongly affected by ozone depletion because of its proximity to Antarctica. Solar UV-B under Nothofagus antarctica branches was manipulated using a polyester plastic film to attenuate UV-B (uvb-) and an Aclar film to provide near-ambient UV-B (uvb+). The plastic films were placed on both north-facing (i.e., high solar radiation in the Southern Hemisphere) and south-facing branches. Insects consumed 40% less leaf area from north- than from south-facing branches, and at least 30% less area from uvb+ branches than from uvb-branches. The reduced herbivory …
Correspondence between regional delineations and spatial patterns in macroinvertebrate assemblages of boreal headwater streams
2002
AbstractGeographical stratification may provide a useful framework for stream management programs, yet most studies testing the utility of such stratifications have been conducted in temperate regions. We studied the correspondence between regional delineations (5 ecoregions, 11 subecoregions), environmental characteristics, and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in 156 boreal headwater streams in Finland, using a combination of principal components analysis, nonmetric multidimensional scaling, and discriminant function analysis (DFA). Both stream characteristics and macroinvertebrate assemblage structure showed a closer correspondence to ecoregions than to subecoregions, a pattern partl…
Transforming expertise from individual to regional community expertise: a four‐year study of an education intervention
2010
In this paper we present the empirical results of a study showing that individualised expertise can be transformed into regional community expertise by means of an education intervention programme. In view of the ongoing reform of the municipal and service structures in Finland, during which small municipalities are combined into areas with populations in excess of 20,000, the need for community expertise is obvious. The reorganisation of service arrangements aims at efficiency, lower costs, quality service and increased regional competitiveness. Due to the reform, local actors are expected to provide new, collaboration‐oriented strategies, while healthcare professionals in the municipaliti…
