Intravenous Regional Anesthesia

1988

Intravenous regional anesthesia was first described by Bier in 1908. The technique fell into disuse until 1963, when Holmes revived the technique by substituting lidocaine for procaine (see Sect. V. D, “Choice and Dosage of Agents”).

Smart switching in feedforward control of grip force during manipulation of elastic objects

2017

AbstractSwitching systems are common in artificial control systems. Here, we suggest that the brain adopts a switched feedforward control of grip forces during manipulation of objects. We measured how participants modulated grip force when interacting with soft and rigid virtual springs when stiffness varied nearly continuously between trials. We identified a sudden phase transition between two forms of feedforward control that differed in the timing of the synchronization between the anticipated load force and the applied grip force. The switch occurred several trials after a threshold stiffness level. These results suggest that in the control of grip force, the brain acts as a switching c…

Papular-purpuric gloves-and-socks syndrome : presentation of a clinical case

2007

Papular-Purpuric Glove-and-Sock Syndrome is a rare, infectious disease, of viral etiology, characterized by the presence of pruritus, edema and symmetrical erythema, very well defined at the wrists and ankles with a gloves-and-socks distribution. Other areas can be affected, with a moderate erythema appearing in cheeks, elbows, knees, armpits, abdomen, groin, external genitalia, internal face of the thighs and the buttocks. Erosions, small ulcers, enanthema and blisters can be observed in the oral cavity and lips, and less frequently in other mucous membranes. Complications are rare, although they can be severe, 50% of the published cases are related with the Parvovirus B19. Due to its oral…

Una causa inusual de dolor en el pulgar: : osteoma osteoide de la falange proximal del pulgar

2018

Osteoid osteoma located in the hand is a rare clinical entity that is often confused with other bone diseases such as osteomyelitis, enchondroma or intraosseous epidermoid cyst. At the level of the hand, the diagnosis is not always obvious, given that the clinical and radiographic findings are usually unusual. Definitive treatment usually requires surgical resection of the lesion by curettage or block excision. We describe the clinical case of a 16-year-old adolescent patient with an osteoid osteoma of uncommon location at the level of the proximal phalanx of the thumb and without the clinical and typical radiographic appearance of the same, which made it difficult to diagnose it, as well a…

Desmoid tumor of the tongue

2008

Desmoid tumors are rare neoplasms accounting for 0.03% of all neoplasms and have an estimated incidence of 2 to 4 per million per year. World Health Organization currently refers to all of the deep types of fibromatosis as desmoidtype of fibromatoses. The term ?desmoid? refers to the hard, tendon-like appearance of the tumor. The etiological factors suggested include genetic, endocrine and physical factors. About fifty percent of desmoid tumors arise in the abdominal region. The extra-abdominal desmoid tumors present a difficult problem in recognition and management especially because of the striking discrepancy between its deceptively harmless microscopic appearance and its potential to at…

Recidivas tras tratamiento con colagenasa : estudio histológico

2017

recurrences following CCH treatment of Dupuytren?s disease are controversial and sometimes normal pathological anatomy is distorted. Our study aims to evaluate the presence of possible alterations of the disease at pathological level on samples of recurrence of Dupuytren?s disease (CCH vs fasciectomy). Methods: prospective, blind study for pathological and statistical analysis of patients who underwent fasciectomy due to recurrence of Dupuytren?s disease after previous treatment with collagenase or previous fasciectomy. Pathological study with H / E and immunohistochemistry. Results: a total of 8 patients were included (4 with previous treatment with CCH and 4 with fasciectomy). There were …

Active Giant Peripheral Osteoma of the mandible: presentation of one case with follow-up to 6 years

2010

Osteoma, a benign neoplasia of bone tissue, is considered a quiescent neoplasm. An active osteoma is an uncom- mon lesion. We presented a case of a mandibular osteoma with an unusual active behavior. In January of 2001 was admitted in the Oral Medicine Service a 11-years old female because an asymptomatic growth in the left side of their face with two years of evolution. Radiographical examination revealed a well circumscribed spherical radio- paque lesion of approximately 2 x 2 cm in diameter on lateral side of the left angle of the mandible. Microscopically the surgical sample coming from incisional biopsy showed normal bone tissue. A diagnosis of osteoid osteoma was emitted. Surgical tre…
