Coauthorship networks and institutional collaboration patterns in reproductive biology.

2007

Objective Reproductive biology is a highly productive area. By analyzing papers published in the major journals in the period 2003–2005, the collaborative patterns were characterized. Design Original research papers published in 2004 in the journals included in the first quartile of the category "Reproductive Biology" of the Journal Citation Reports (2005) were selected. A bibliometric analysis was carried out with the information obtained, thus building up the networks of coauthorship and institutional collaboration. Result(s) A total of 4,702 papers were analyzed, 96.75% signed in collaboration by two or more authors, the authors per paper index being 5.24; 73.73% of the papers were colla…

Decomposition analysis of bioresources: Implementing a competitive and sustainable bioeconomy strategy in the Baltic Sea Region

2021

Bioeconomy development has become one of the new trends in policy design and research. This study looks at biotic resource extraction in the Baltic Sea region countries providing detailed country by country analyses of factors affecting changes in resource extraction. The study is based on the index decomposition analysis including factors related to bioeconomy strategies such as the population, share of people employed in bioeconomy, labour intensity, biotic resource extraction productivity, share of bioeconomy, export intensity, and share of bioresource export. The main factors increasing biotic resource extraction were the growth in labour material intensity, biotic extraction productivi…

How the EU regional policy can shape urban change in Southern Europe: learning from different planning processes in Palermo

2019

The article provides an interpretation of the role played by the EU regional policy in the process of urban change experienced in Palermo, the fifth Italian city by population and capital of one of the largest Europe’s less developed regions (Sicily). Through an analysis of various EU-funded planning initiatives implemented over the last two decades – from the Urban Community Initiative in the late nineties to the current Integrated Territorial Investments under the 2014–2020 urban agenda –, the work explores their effects from three main perspectives: urban regen- eration, local governance, and planning innovation.

Chromosome analysis using different staining techniques and fluorescent in situ hybridization in Cerithium vulgatum (Gastropoda: Cerithiidae)

2002

In the present paper one population of the “large” subtidal mollusc Cerithium vulgatum Bruguiere, 1792 (Gastropoda: Cerithiidae) from the Northwestern coast of Sicily was investigated from a karyological point of view. The chromosome complement was Giemsa stained, conventionally karyotyped in 18 homomorphic chromosome pairs (10 bi-armed and 8 mono-armed), and subsequently analysed using silver, CMA3 and DAPI staining, and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with three repetitive DNA probes [ribosomal DNA (rDNA), (TTAGGG)n and (GATA)n]. FISH with the rDNA probe consistently mapped major ribosomal sites (18S-28S rDNA) in the terminal region of the short arms of one small sized mono-armed…

Methodology, Sources and New Evidence

2018

This chapter presents the methodology used to construct the new estimates of regional GDP in Spain, breaking down the territory into NUTS3 and NUTS2 regions (provinces and autonomous communities respectively) and dividing sectors homogeneously into five production areas: agriculture, mining, manufacturing and public utilities, construction and services. Taken as a whole in combination with data on regional population, this information provides a picture of regional inequality in per-capita income in Spain over the long term, starting from the early stages of modern economic growth. This new quantitative evidence enables to point out some of the stylized facts observed in the regional distri…

The importance of Hygienics and Clean Water Treatment in Valencia (1860-1910)

2016

Color-assortative mating in a color-polymorphic lacertid lizard

2013

Color polymorphisms are common in lizards, which provide an excellent model system to study their evolution and adaptive function. The lacertid genus Podarcis is particularly interesting because it comprises several polymorphic species. Previous studies with lacertid lizards have tried to explain the maintenance of color polymorphisms by correlational selection between color morphs and several phenotypic traits. Particular attention has been paid to their putative role as signals reflecting alternative reproductive strategies under frequency-dependent selection, but the relationship between mating patterns and color polymorphism has not been previously considered. In this study, we use long…

Capacity building in clinical and molecular characterization of rare neurodegenerative diseases through the development of a local register and impro…

2020

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are very polymorphic and affect people of all ages. They concern both rare diseases and more common diseases. Improving knowledge of NDs in the French Caribbean region requires special attention because of the unique environmental and genetic background of its populations. In Martinique, there is a huge need for scientific research on rare NDs. While epidemiological and clinical research has increased over the past decade in the French West Indies, there is still little or no data on the genetics of NDs in these regions. The advent of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) on a global scale has the potential to make a difference in this field, provided that techno…

L'idée de région et le fait urbain The idea of region and the urban fact

2009

The Fluid City Experience: An Update

2016

This chapter describes the actual status of thirteen European cities that become fluid cities through their strategies for urban regeneration. These cities are divided into three groups: the large port-cities, the medium rank “city-port” cities, the riverfront cities. For every city, we define the status of urban environment and population, the trend for port and airport traffic and the strategies for urban regeneration.
