How Do Cancer Registries in Europe Estimate Completeness of Registration?
2008
Summary Objectives: Several methods for estimating completeness in cancer registries have been proposed. Little is known about their relative merits. Before embarking on a systematic comparison of methods we wanted to know which indicators were currently in use and whether there had been comparative investigations of estimation methods. Methods: We performed a survey among European cancer registries asking which methods for estimating completeness they used and whether they had performed comparisons of methods. Results: One hundred and ninety-five European cancer registries were contacted after identification using membership directories of the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) a…
The Role of Attitudes and Ethicality on Branded Video Games(Advergames) Acceptance
2014
Advergames are branded video games that blur the line between entertainment and advertising. Advergames are gaining momentum among advertisers and advertising agencies fueled by their capability to engage teenagers and young adults with branded communications. This study focuses on consumers’ intentions to use advergames analyzing three attitudinal factors – attitude toward advertising, attitude toward product placement in video games, and attitude toward advergames- and the ethical evaluations of the use of advergames as an advertising format (ethicality). The proposed model was empirically tested using a sample of 304 college students. Major findings suggest that attitudes toward advergam…
The origins of agriculture in Iberia: a computational model
2015
Here we discuss the importance of using the rich and growing database of high-precision, audited radiocarbon dates for high-resolution bottom-up modelling to focus on problems concerning the spread of the Neolithic in the Iberia. We also compare the spread of the Late Mesolithic (so-called Geometric) and the Early Neolithic using our modelling environment. Our results suggest that the source of radiocarbon data used to evaluate alternative hypotheses plays an important role in the results and open up new lines of research for the future.
The effect of agglomeration economies and geography on the survival of accommodation businesses in Sicily
2021
The study explores the geographical pattern of the accommodation industry in the Italian insular region of Sicily, focusing on the determinants of the risk of market exit. We adopt a standard framework of business survival analysis where agglomeration economies play an important role. We then extend the analysis by considering the role of geography to explore whether the risk of market exit depends on nearness to desirable amenities. The geography is here measured by the distance from the coast and the altitude of the place where the firm is located. When we look at the entire population of accommodation firms that started between 2010 and 2014, we find evidence that the risk of failure inc…
Regional income convergence in Colombia: population, space, and long-run dynamics
2022
We examine the trajectory of regional income dynamics in Colombia. Using data on all 33 Colombian departments from 2000 to 2016, we employ extensions of (spatial) Markov chains, space-time mobility measures, along with a fully weighted version of the distribution analysis approach. By considering these extensions, our analysis enables us to answer questions such as whether the role of spatial context influences the distributional dynamics of Colombian departments, or the magnitude of the moderating effect of department’s population. The inclusion of additional measures such as the asymptotic half-life of convergence provides additional results, informing on how long it would take to reach t…
The involvement of ankle muscles in maintaining balance in the upright posture is higher in elderly fallers
2016
International audience; The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mechanical contribution of ankle muscles in the upright stance differed among young adults (YA) (n = 10, age: similar to 24.3), elderly non-fallers (ENF) (n = 12, age: similar to 77.3) and elderly fallers (EF) (n = 20, age: similar to 80.7). Torque and electromyographic (EMG) activity were recorded on the triceps surae and tibialis anterior during maximum and submaximum contractions in the seated position. EMG activity was also recorded in subjects standing still. Plantar flexor (PF) and dorsal flexor (DF) torques generated in the upright posture were estimated from the torque-EMG relationship obtained during sub…
Peripheral arterial disease and its clinical significance in nonagenarians
2008
The purpose of this study was to characterize the prevalence and clinical features of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) among 90-year-old individuals and to assess its relationship to lower extremity functional status and survival over one year.A prospective, population- based study of all 90-year-old residents of Jyväskylä, Finland. Fifty-eight out of the 79 registered residents were examined for ankle-brachial index (ABI). Lower extremity functional status was assessed as self-reported difficulty in performing specific physical activities of daily living (PADL). In a subgroup of 36 individuals, lower extremity functioning was further assessed by measuring walking endurance and walking vel…
Antagonist mechanical contribution to resultant maximal torque at the ankle joint in young and older men.
2007
Abstract A recorded muscular torque at one joint is a resultant torque corresponding to the participation of both agonist and antagonist muscles. This study aimed to examine the effect of aging on the mechanical contributions of both plantar- and dorsi-flexors to the resultant maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torques exerted at the ankle joint, in dorsi-flexion (DF) and plantar-flexion (PF). The estimation of isometric agonist and antagonist torques by means of an EMG biofeedback technique was made with nine young (mean age 24 years) and nine older (mean age 80 years) men. While there was a non-significant age-related decline in the measured resultant DF MVC torque (−15%; p =0.06), there…
New dopamine D2 receptor polymorphisms in rats and association with apomorphine-induced stereotypies.
2002
Adult Wistar rats injected with the dopamine receptor agonist apomorphine display different types of motility patterns with respect to oral stereotypes and locomotor activities. It was tested whether phenotypes exhibiting either ‘sniffing’ or ‘non-sniffing’ behaviour differed in gene structures of dopamine receptors D1 or D2. Forty-five Wistar rats of both genders were tested after a single dose of apomorphine (2 mg/kg s.c.) for stereotyped behaviour. Sequence analysis of the 5′ flanking region, the 5′ untranslated region and the coding region of the two genes revealed a new sequence for the 5′ flanking region of the D1 receptor gene and two polymorphisms in the promoter region of the D2 re…
