The Regional Economic Impact of Modern Pandemics and Epidemics.

The current COVID-19 pandemic had, and is still having, damaging effects on economic activities. However, similarly to past pandemic and epidemic episodes, its impact risks to be geographically uneven. Based on pandemic and epidemic episodes of the latest two decades, in this paper we try to conjecture the possible future impact that the current pandemic may have on several regional outcomes such as per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and employment. Specifically, we investigate how this impact differs across regions, evaluating some of the different channels through which the heterogeneous effect of health crises may be transmitted to regional economies.

Doctoral graduates represent the pinnacle of education. While the importance of increasing their number has been recognised by the Italian government and there has been a huge increase in the number of publicly funded PhD scholarships, doctoral graduates still struggle in the labour market to find employment commensurate with their skills and competencies. Firm demography and regional development: evidence from Italy

This article contributes to the literature on firm demography and regional development in at least three different ways. First, consumption, rather than employment, which is the most common variable seen in literature, is used to measure the impact of firm demography on regional development. Second, while the literature is mainly focused on the relationship between new business formation and regional development, we investigate both entry and exit flows of firms. Transcriptomic identification of miR-205 target genes potentially involved in metastasis and survival of cutaneous malignant melanoma

AbstractCutaneous melanoma is an aggressive neoplasm and is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. Several miRNAs are involved in melanoma tumor progression. One of them is miR-205, the loss of which contributes to the development of melanoma metastasis. We evaluated whole-genome mRNA expression profiling associated with different miR-205 expression levels in melanoma cells. Differential expression analysis identified 243 differentially expressed transcripts including inositol polyphosphate 5′-phosphatase-like protein-1 (INPPL1) and BTB/POZ Domain-Containing Protein 3 (BTBD3). Multifaceted contributions of epidermal langerhans cells to cutaneous carcinogenesis.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most prevalent invasive malignancy with metastatic potential. The epidermis is exposed to a variety of environmental DNA-damaging chemicals, principal among which are polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) ubiquitous in the environment, tobacco smoke, and broiled meats. Langerhans cells (LC) comprise a network of dendritic cells situated adjacent to basal, suprabasal, and follicular infundibular keratinocytes that when mutated can give rise to SCC, and LC-intact mice are markedly more susceptible than LC-deficient mice to chemical carcinogenesis provoked by initiation with the model PAH, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). Long-term results of fascial sling procedure

1993

In a retrospective study 108 patients (average age: 56.5 years) could be evaluated, who were treated with a fascial sling plasty because of pure genuine stress incontinence (n=90) or combined stress/urge incontinence (n=18). 72 patients (66.6%) had recurrent incontinence after previous surgery. The average follow-up was 5 years.

Post-Transcriptional Regulation of Human Inducible Nitric-Oxide Synthase Expression by the Jun N-terminal Kinase

Human inducible nitric-oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is regulated both at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. In the present study, the effect of Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) on human iNOS expression was investigated. In A549/8 human alveolar epithelial cells, both the inhibition of JNK by a pharmacological inhibitor anthra[1,9-cd]pyrazol-6(2H)-one1,9-pyrazoloanthrone (SP600125) and small interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated down-regulation of JNK led to a reduction of iNOS mRNA and protein expression. iNOS promoter activity was not affected by these treatments. During the coronavirus disease pandemic rising in 2020, governments and nongovernmental organizations across the globe have taken great efforts to curb the infection rate by promoting or legally prescribing behavior that can reduce the spread of the virus. At the same time, this pandemic has given rise to speculations and conspiracy theories. Conspiracy worldviews have been connected to refusal to trust science, the biomedical model of disease, and legal means of political engagement in previous research. Costantini, Roberto Barbetti, Maria Fantappie` , Giovanni L’Abate, Romina Lorenzetti, and Simona Magini illustrate the distribution of soil classes, mainly by means of maps. Soil regions on hills are the most lithologically and climatically variable environments, and host the greatest soil variability and endemisms.
