Soccer players' fitting perception of different upper boot materials.

2016

[EN] The present study assessed the influence of upper boot materials on fitting perception. Twenty players tested three soccer boots only differing in the upper boot material (natural calf leather, natural kangaroo leather and synthetic leather). Players reported fitting perception and preference on specific foot areas using a perceived fitting scale. Ratings were averaged for every foot area. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the differences between boots. The kangaroo leather boots were perceived tighter and closer to the preferred fitting in general fitting, metatarsals area and instep area. The synthetic leather boots were perceived as the loosest and as the most distant boot…

Exercise Effects on Erythrocyte Deformability in Exercise-induced Arterial Hypoxemia

2014

Exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia (EIAH) is often found in endurance-trained subjects at high exercise intensity. The role of erythrocyte deformability (ED) in EIAH has been scarcely explored. We aimed to explore the role of erythrocyte properties and lactate accumulation in the response of ED in EIAH. ED was determined in 10 sedentary and in 16 trained subjects, both before and after a maximal incremental test, and after recovery, along with mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and red blood cell lactate concentrations. EIAH was found in 6 trained subjects (∆SaO2=-8.25±4.03%). Sedentary and non-EIAH trained subjects showed reduced ED after exercise, while no effect on ED was found in EIAH train…

An intense physical rehabilitation programme determines pain relief and improves the global quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia.

2019

OBJECTIVES:It is accepted that the optimal management of patients with fibromyalgia (FM) requires a combination of non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions. Our study aimed to analyse the effects of a supplemented physical program on the quality of life of FM patients.METHODS:We enrolled 60 patients, all female (mean age 49±5.7 years), with primary FM (mean years of disease 33±12 months). Patients who agreed to participate in this study met the proposed 1990 American College of Rheumatology classification criteria and the 2010 American College of Rheumatology preliminary diagnostic criteria and were recruited at Policlinico P. Giaccone, University Hospital of Palermo, Italy. Th…

Initiating running barefoot: Effects on muscle activation and impact accelerations in habitually rearfoot shod runners

2016

Runners tend to shift from a rearfoot to a forefoot strike pattern when running barefoot. However, it is unclear how the first attempts at running barefoot affect habitually rearfoot shod runners. Due to the inconsistency of their recently adopted barefoot technique, a number of new barefoot-related running injuries are emerging among novice barefoot runners. The aim of this study was therefore to analyse the influence of three running conditions (natural barefoot [BF], barefoot with a forced rearfoot strike [BRS], and shod [SH]) on muscle activity and impact accelerations in habitually rearfoot shod runners. Twenty-two participants ran at 60% of their maximal aerobic speed while foot strik…

Intimate partner violence in women with disabilities: perception of healthcare and attitudes of health professionals

2017

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major social problem and public health issue, but we still have a relatively small amount of data about partner violence in women with disabilities. The main objective of this study was to understand the experiences of women with disabilities who are or have been abused by their partners and to explore the knowledge, views and training requirements of primary care professionals.Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with women with disabilities who had experienced IPV (n = 14), and focus groups with healthcare professionals (n = 16).Women with disabilities suffer specific forms of abuse. Because they depend on the people around them to take a…

Ski jumping boots limit effective take-off in ski jumping

2002

In this study, we measured the vertical and horizontal take-off forces, plantar pressures and activation patterns of four muscles (vastus lateralis, gluteus maximus, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius) in 10 ski jumpers in simulated laboratory conditions when wearing either training shoes or ski jumping boots. We found significant differences in vertical (P < 0.001), horizontal (P < 0.05) and resultant (P < 0.001) take-off velocities and vertical force impulse (P < 0.01). We found no significant differences in the jumpers' initial take-off positions; however, the jumping boots condition resulted in a smaller displacement in the final position of the following joint angles: ankle angle (P < 0.…

Stability of habitual physical activity and sport participation: a longitudinal tracking study

2007

Although one of the most important aims of physical education and public sport policy is to encourage life-long habitual physical activity, very little is known of the stability or tracking of physical activity. As a part of a larger research project called Cardiovascular Risks in Young Finns, the purpose of the study reported here was to investigate the stability (tracking) of leisure-time physical activity and sport participation at intervals of 3, 6, 9 and 12 years from age 9 to 30. The subjects, chosen by stratified random sample, represent five geographical areas of the country and eight gender-age cohorts (9, 12, 15 and 18 years old in 1980). Physical activity and sport participation …

Recombinant follicle stimulating hormone stimulation in poor responders with normal basal concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone and oestradi…

1999

A total of 30 young infertile patients who exhibited a poor response in two previous consecutive cycles, despite having normal basal follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and oestradiol concentrations, were invited to participate in a prospective randomized study comparing the clinical efficacy of recombinant (rFSH) and urinary (uFSH) follicle stimulating hormone. An evaluation of the total dose used (3800 IU versus 4600 IU, P < 0.05) and duration of treatment (10.2 days versus 13.2 days, P < 0.05) showed a significantly shorter treatment period as well as a significantly lower total dose of FSH required to induce ovulation successfully in the group of patients treated with rFSH. Significantly…

Enhanced rehabilitation guidance after arthroscopic capsulolabral repair of the shoulder : a randomized controlled trial

2020

Objective: To compare the effects of a 12-month home-based exercise program to usual care in patients after arthroscopic capsulolabral repair of the shoulder. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting: Outpatient physical and rehabilitation medicine clinic. Subjects: Forty-five patients (mean age: 35 years; standard deviation (SD): 10 years) who underwent arthroscopic capsulolabral repair due to labral lesion were randomized into an exercise group (EG) or a control group (CG). Intervention: The EG received a 12-month home-based additional exercise program with four physiotherapy follow-up visits, while the CG received standard postoperative exercise instructions. Main measures: Self-repo…
