Compressive behaviour of eccentrically loaded slender masonry columns confined by FRP

2018

Abstract Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) confinement represents an effective tool for retrofitting masonry piers or columns enhancing their structural performance. This technique has been widely studied in the literature mainly with reference to short columns, while no extensive information is available on the influence of second order effects on its efficacy in case of slender members. Within this framework, the presented study concerns a simplified method able to assess the effects of FRP confinement on the compressive behaviour of slender masonry columns. A proper constitutive law of FRP confined masonry in compression is adopted for performing a sectional analysis, in which also consider…

Fatigue delamination experiments on GFRP and CFRP specimens under single and mixed fracture modes

2011

This paper deals with the experimental analysis of the delamination phenomena in composite materials under different loading conditions. Quasi-static and fatigue tests are performed on specimens made of glass-fibre (GFRP) and carbon-fibre (CFRP) reinforced plastic. In particular, experiments have been carried out under single fracture modes I and II (using standard DCB and ENF test configurations) and mixed modes I+II (using the MMB test configuration) with several mode mixtures. Results obtained for the two materials have been compared paying attention on the relationship between the parameters that describe the fatigue behaviour and the mode mixture acting during the crack propagation. © …

EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL EVALUATION OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF GFRP SANDWICH PANELS

2007

This work deals with the analysis of the mechanical behaviour of a class of sandwich structures widely employed in marine constructions, constituted by fiber-glass laminate skins over PVC foam or polyester mat cores. In detail, a systematic experimental study and numerical simulations have shown that the theoretical prediction of the strength and the actual failure mechanism of these sandwich structures can be affected by significant errors, specially in the presence of prevalent shear loading. Moreover, because of the low shear stiffness and the elastic constants mismatch of the skins and core material, failure modes and strength are strongly influenced by eventual stresses orthogonal to t…

Use of FRP fabrics and stainless steel grids for strengthening brick masonry columns

2016

This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on 42 solid clay brick columns internally strengthened by FRP fabrics or stainless steel grids placed in the horizontal joints of mortar. Monotonic compressive loading tests were carried out under concentric and eccentric load. Eccentric tests were carried out loading the specimens on a reduced area with respect to the entire crosssection producing a D-region. The reinforcing of every course and of alternate courses are studied. The effectiveness of the proposed strengthening techniques is discussed, in terms of increase in strength and energy required to the collapse of brick columns. An analytical expression is proposed that …

Simple Plastic Model for Shear Critical SFRC Beams

2010

A simple physical model, for prediction of ultimate shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams is developed on the basis of a plastic approach originally proposed for reinforced concrete (RC) beams without stirrups. It is founded on the hypothesis that cracks can be transformed into yield lines, and thus is know as Crack Sliding Model (CSM). First, the CSM is improved in order to take into account the shear strength increase for deep beams, due to the arch effect. Then, the effectiveness factors for fibrous concrete under biaxial stresses are evaluated, taking into account the post-cracking tensile strength of SFRC and its ability to control slippage along shear cracks. …

Reconstruction Problem of Reinforced Concrete Beams under Harmonic Excitations

2007

A damage detection method based on harmonic structural vibrations has been applied to reconstruct realistic damage patterns of reinforced concrete beams. It was shown that the application of a hybrid method (genetic algorithm and Levenberg-Marquardt minimization technique) makes it possible to effectively reconstruct the flexural stiffness drops as small as 10-20% with the maximum error of 4%. The error increases to about 7 to 9% with the presence of 1% measurement noise.

Compressive behavior of short fibrous reinforced concrete members with square cross-section

2011

In the present paper a mechanical model to predict the compressive response of high strength short concrete columns with square cross-section confined by transverse steel is presented. The model allows one to estimate the equivalent confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel during the loading process taking into account of the interaction of the stirrups with the inner core both in the plane of the stirrups and in the space between two successive stirrups. The lateral pressure distributions at hoop levels are obtained by using a simple model of elastic beam on elastic medium simulating the interaction between stirrups and concrete core, including yielding of steel stirrups and dam…

Electroelastic Analysis of Piezoelectric Composite Laminates by Boundary Integral Equations

2004

A boundary integral representation for the electroelastic state in piezoelectric composite laminates subjected to axial extension, bending, torsion, shear/bending, and electric loadings is proposed. The governing equations are presented in terms of electromechanical generalized variables by the use of a suitable matrix notation. Thus, the three-dimensional electroelasticity solution for piezoelectric composite laminates is generated from a set of two partially coupled differential equations defined on the cross section of each individual ply within the laminate. These ply equations are linked through the interface conditions, which allow restoration of the model of the laminate as a whole. …

Flexural Response of RC Beams Failing in Shear

2020

In this paper, an analytical model to determine the flexural response of simply supported RC beams under four-point bending tests failing in flexure and shear is presented. The model is able to provide load-deflection curves, including also the shear contributions, which are determined assuming a kinematic rigid plastic model able to consider different strength contributions such as the concrete, the dowel action, and transverse reinforcement with progressive yielding. For each contribution, a physical explanation is provided to link the strength evaluation with a specific kinematic evolution for the determination of the overall response of RC beams under combined shear and flexural loads. …
