Temporal resolution is a basic property of the visual system and critically depends upon retinal temporal coding properties which are also of importance for directional coding. Whether the temporal coding properties for directional coding derive form inherent properties or critically depend upon the temporal coding mechanisms is unclear. Thinking about anxiety moderates the relationship between implicit and explicit anxiety measures

Abstract Explicit measures (e.g., questionnaires) assess introspectively accessible self-descriptions and evaluations. In contrast, implicit measures (e.g., the Implicit Association Test) assess the self-concept indirectly, usually by means of performance measures such as reaction-time tasks. Correlations between implicit and explicit measures of personality dispositions tend to be low. It is well-known the advantages of measuring chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivity for detecting pathologies. But these measurements are rarely used in clinical practice, due the complexity of the measurements and the examinator specialization. In fact, there is not a complete characterization of the response of the visual pathways to achromatic and chromatic spatio-temporal frequency stimuli. We have designed a new experimental device that facilitates these measurements and allow us to characterize the visual response in healthy patients. In this paper, we evaluated the responses of the visual pathways in healthy patients.

Visually induced motion sickness and presence in videogames: The role of sound

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a well-known phenomenon in virtual environments, simulators, and videogames. We conducted an experiment to analyze the role of sound on the severity of VIMS and the feeling of presence in videogames. Thirty-two subjects first watched a pre-recorded sequence of the game “Mirrors Edge” and then played the game actively. Game-play sound was activated for half of the participants. VIMS was measured via the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire and the Fast Motion Sickness Scale, presence was captured using the Presence Questionnaire. Monitoring the anomalous release of this parameter, we can retrieve useful information for the mitigation of volcanic hazards, such as for air traffic security. Soil CO2 degassing on Mt Etna (Sicily) during the period 1989?1993: discrimination between climatic and volcanic influences

Wide variations were measured in the diffuse CO2 flux through the soils in three selected areas of Mt Etna between August 1989 and March 1993. Degassing of CO2 from the area of Zafferana Etnea-S. Venerina, on the eastern slope of the volcano, has been determined to be more strongly influenced by meteorological parameters than the other areas. The seasonal component found in the data from this area has been excluded using a filtering algorithm based on the best fitting equation calculated from the correlation between CO2 flux values and those of air temperature.
