Abstract A single administration of enantiomerically pure 11,12-dihydrodiols of dibenzo[ a,l ]pyrene (DB[ a,l ]P) on the back of NMRI mice and subsequent chronic treatment with 12- O -tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) (initiation/promotion assay) revealed strikingly different carcinogenic activities of both enantiomers. Abstract The activating JAK2V617F mutation has been described in the majority of patients with BCR-ABL-negative myeloproliferative disorders (MPD). In this report, we characterize the small-molecule LS104 as a novel non-ATP-competitive JAK2 inhibitor: Treatment of JAK2V617F-positive cells with LS104 resulted in dose-dependent induction of apoptosis and inhibition of JAK2 autophosphorylation and of downstream targets. Activation of these targets by JAK2 was confirmed in experiments using small interfering RNA. LS104 inhibited JAK2 kinase activity in vitro. Cell adhesion molecules such as beta(1)-integrins, which bind to the RGD sequence (arginine-glycine-asparagine) and CD44 are involved in this process. Paclitaxel plays an important role in the treatment of primary breast cancer. However, a substantial proportion of patients treated with paclitaxel does not appear to derive any benefit from this therapy. We performed a prospective study using tumour cells isolated from 50 primary breast carcinomas. Sensitivity of primary tumour cells to paclitaxel was determined in a clinically relevant range of concentrations (0.85-27.2 microg ml(-1) paclitaxel) using an ATP assay. Semi-feral local livestock populations, like Maremmana cattle, are the object of renewed interest for the conservation of biological diversity and the preservation and exploitation of unique and potentially relevant genetic material. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic diversity parameters in semi-feral Maremmana cattle using both pedigree- and genomic-based approaches (FIS and FROH), and to detect regions of homozygosity (ROH) and heterozygosity (ROHet) in the genome. The objective of this work is to analyze the relations between education, human capital and the industrial performances in Senegal. The approached questions are different and varied, and more particularly, they relate to the investment of industrial concerns in the human resources (levels of qualification of the workforce, training policies), at the various levels of efficiency (internal and external) of the educational system, in the adequacy training / employment, etc. The impact of the human capital investment of the firms on their own performances is finally studied.

Aims The objective of the study was to establish an experimental model for the extracorporeal perfusion of the pig detrusor. In order to validate this model we examined some biochemical parameters and determined the effect of carbachol on the contractility of perfused female pig bladders. Methods Twenty-six pig bladders were perfused with Krebs–Ringer bicarbonate-glucose buffer for a period up to 5 hr with the aim to preserve a viable organ, which would be responsive to contraction-inducing agents. Chronic toxicity studies were conducted with an algae (Nannochloris oculata) and the cladoceran (Daphnia magna) to determine their relative sensitivities to the thiocarbamate herbicide thiobencarb (S-4-chlorobenzyl diethylthiocarbamate). Most of the algal populations were initially affected by exposure to the herbicide. Thiobencarb concentrations higher than 0.5 mg/L significantly reduced algal densities after 24-h exposure. The 24-h static EC50 in D. magna was 3.01 mg/L. The sublethal effects of 0.3, 0.37, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.5 mg/L of thiobencarb concentrations on the survival, reproduction, and growth of D. magna were monitored for 21 days.
