C*-seminorms and representation on partial *-algebras
2008
In this paper we investigate the *-representations of a partial *-algebra A. In particular, it is proved that, if A is semiassociative and if the set of right multipliers is dense with respect to a seminorm p on A, there exists a bounded and regular *-represenation on A.
An equivalent formulation of 0-closed sesquilinear forms
2022
AbstractIn 1970, McIntosh introduced the so-called 0-closed sesquilinear forms and proved a corresponding representation theorem. In this paper, we give a simple equivalent formulation of 0-closed sesquilinear forms. The main underlying idea is to consider minimal pairs of non-negative dominating forms.
Representations of modules over a *-algebra and related seminorms
2008
Representations of a module X over a ∗-algebra A# are considered and some related seminorms are constructed and studied, with the aim of finding bounded ∗-representations of A#.
Slight extensions of positive linear functionals: two concrete realizations.
2009
In this paper we show, in full details, some example of slight extensions of a nonclosable positive linear functional ώ defined on a dense *-subalgebra Ao of a given topological *-algebra.
Principled Governance: Politics to the People
2022
An influential narrative claims that the erosion of the modern nation state is causing a historical shift from «government» to «governance». Society-centred new modes of governance are displacing state-centric tools of government. Shaped by bottom-up pressures, these changes are in the process of engendering a more democratic and functionally differentiated type of agency – the Networked Polity. The paper challenges this narrative. It claims that extant governance networks are merely means for co-opting specific societal actors. For, the societal actors operating within those networks are given much reduced powers than the ones conceded to them in the past by declining neo-corporate arrange…
Rappresentanza politica e libertà civile nelle colonie francesi: il Projet de loi relatif à la constitution politique (1841)
2015
From December 1840 to May 1841, the deliberations of the “Broglie Commission” (Commission des affaires Coloniales) were about the problem of colonial representation. The Commission presented a draft proposing the abolition of the colonial councils in the four French colonies and the colonial delegates for the King’s government. In substitution, every colony would have had a general elective council and its organization would have been established by royal ordinances in the form of procedures of the Public Administration. Despite the important work, the Commission failed to produce the desired results because of the opposition of landowners and colonies who wanted to preserve their «specific…
Mechanisms of the Embedding of Extortion Racket Systems: The case of Cosa Nostra
2017
The chapter summarises some of the research undertaken in the EU project GLODERS which is directed towards investigating the dynamics of extortion racket systems (ERS) of which the Sicilian Mafia is but one example (http://www.gloders.eu/). Before describing in more detail the principal formal characteristics of the Mafia-type organizations and the ways in which the extortion racket system works in a certain territory it is necessary to briefly outline what is a mafia-type organization and what we mean when we talk about the extortion racket system. The chapter propose an analysis of the mechanisms of the process of extortion in Sicily.
Violenza di genere e femminicidio nelle narrazioni giudiziarie in Italia. Il punto di vista dei testimoni privilegiati
2020
Media, representation of organized crime and trust building.
2014
The presentation looks at the ways in which the delicate question of the relationship between mafia and politics is discussed. Newspapers, as actors can generate effects of the construction of reality, also contribute to the creation of the collective representation of the Mafia. During the presentation, the perception of the Mafia starting from different empirical data is discussed.
Counter-Narratives Against Prejudice. How Second-Generation Youth Reverse Media Representations
2022
This paper deals with the OLTRE project (ISF - DG Migration and Home Affairs, EU), funded to counter the radicalization of second-generation migrants in Italy and created by a network made up of universities and private companies. This article shows the results of a study regarding the involvement of second-generation youth in the co-production of the social campaign for online communication, representing the outcome of the OLTRE project. The guidelines for the campaign came from our in-depth sociological field research (42 qualitative interviews of 2G youths, 18-30 years, in 7 Italian towns (Palermo, Cagliari, Rome, Bologna, Milan, Padua, Turin) and from theatre laboratories created by sec…
