Board Gender Diversity and Firm Performance: Evidence from Supply-Side Shocks in China
2019
This paper identifies a positive causal effect of board gender diversity on firm performance by utilizing unique historical events in China. Specifically, the Famine resulted in an evident gender gap in the supply of qualified directors of certain cohorts. Since the shocks differ in both gender and cohorts, we construct a novel "Diff-in-Diff'" instrumental variable and a Bartik instrument for board gender representation. We find that a 10% increase in board female representation can lead to a 2.38% increase in return on assets (ROA). Moreover, our results support the critical mass theory and indicate that female directors are beneficial by lowering risk levels and improving solvency.
Le cinéma roumain pendant la période communiste : représentations de l'histoire nationale
2011
The subject of this PhD dissertation is the historical reconstructions films produced in Romania under communist rule and more precisely between 1960 and 1989. It analyses the social and cultural significance of the representation of national past but also the social and political aspects involved in the production process. In order to understand these research objectives our approach we stress first various logics which chairing the state action towards the culture and in particular towards the cinematography. We intend to analyze the economic, political and ideological conditions of the film production, the directives concerning the general thematic and the orientation that the party trie…
Digital Representation of Urban Changes: Fragments of the Medieval Palermo
2018
In June 2015, the serial heritage site “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale” was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Maredolce Castle and the Scibene Palace, owing to the loss of original elements or due to problems of conservation and function, once resolved, cannot be part of the itinerary. This text proposes a new reading of the configuration of the sites of the monuments analysed. It looks at important moments in their history and represents the modifications made over time. A digital model of the current situation was developed using information assumed from the Carta Tecnica Comunale (Municipal Technical Map). This document served as a start…
RIFLESSIONI SU LINGUAGGIO E COGNIZIONE SPAZIALE Un confronto tra lingue vocali e lingue dei segni
2012
Depending on which theoretical paradigm is used, the relationship between spatial language and spatial thought could be presented in different ways. What is the nature of this relationship? Are spatial cognitive abilities a prerequisite for spatial language or, vice-versa, is it spatial language that shapes and affects our spatial reasoning? This paper is aimed at highlighting the dynamic interaction between spatial language and spatial cognition. That is, we need some spatial abilities in order to acquire spatial language. We share most of these core spatial abilities with other animals. These structures are the basis for spatial language, and this explains the presence of universal featur…
Covariant Operator Formalism for Quantized Superfields
1988
The Takahashi-Umezawa method of deriving the free covariant quantization relations from the linear equations of motion is extended to superfields. The Cauchy problem for free superfields is solved, and an expression for the time independent scalar product is given. For the case of interacting fields, we give the general Kallen-Lehmann spectral representation for the two-point superfield Green functions and, after the introduction of the asymptotic condition for superfields, we give the superfield extension of the Yang-Feldman equation. The case of the D = 2 real scalar superfield and the case of the D = 4 chiral superfield are discussed in detail.
CliffoSor: A Parallel Embedded Architecture for Geometric Algebra and Computer Graphics
2006
Geometric object representation and their transformations are the two key aspects in computer graphics applications. Traditionally, compute-intensive matrix calculations are involved to model and render 3D scenery. Geometric algebra (a.k.a. Clifford algebra) is gaining growing attention for its natural way to model geometric facts coupled with its being a powerful analytical tool for symbolic calculations. In this paper, the architecture of CliffoSor (Clifford Processor) is introduced. ClifforSor is an embedded parallel coprocessing core that offers direct hardware support to Clifford algebra operators. A prototype implementation on an FPGA board is detailed. Initial test results show more …
Simplified spiking neural network architecture and STDP learning algorithm applied to image classification
2015
Spiking neural networks (SNN) have gained popularity in embedded applications such as robotics and computer vision. The main advantages of SNN are the temporal plasticity, ease of use in neural interface circuits and reduced computation complexity. SNN have been successfully used for image classification. They provide a model for the mammalian visual cortex, image segmentation and pattern recognition. Different spiking neuron mathematical models exist, but their computational complexity makes them ill-suited for hardware implementation. In this paper, a novel, simplified and computationally efficient model of spike response model (SRM) neuron with spike-time dependent plasticity (STDP) lear…
Spoken Word Production
2018
This chapter examines two distinct stages of the production of spoken words: the retrieval of semantic and lexical representations, followed by morphological and phonological processing. In both cases, it summarizes models of lexical representation and lexical selection that have focused on the retrieval of single words. These models agree that different lexical information becomes available at different points in time, with access to semantic and syntactic information preceding access to information about lexical form. The structure of this review reflects this dichotomy. Comprehensive production models must also account for the sequencing and timing of lexical processing in multiword utte…
