Evaluating similarity measures for gaze patterns in the context of representational competence in physics education

2018

The competent handling of representations is required for understanding physics' concepts, developing problem-solving skills, and achieving scientific expertise. Using eye-tracking methodology, we present the contributions of this paper as follows: We first investigated the preferences of students with the different levels of knowledge; experts, intermediates, and novices, in representational competence in the domain of physics problem-solving. It reveals that experts more likely prefer to use vector than other representations. Besides, a similar tendency of table representation usage was observed in all groups. Also, diagram representation has been used less than others. Secondly, we evalu…

Helena Niemirowska Syrkus: Graphic analysis of the ‘House of Dr Nelken in Warsaw’

2017

In 1920s and 1930s, Warsaw was becoming one of the hubs of propagation of the new architecture, thanks to the geographical contiguity with the Weimar Republic, which allowed the formation of young minds aimed at a blending of architecture, art and music. In this cultural context, a young Helena Niemirowska Syrkus supported the idea that urban planning and architecture, conceived as art forms, had to target at the definition of a language able of expressing the great revolutionary step achieved in the social, economic and political life of that time, through new configurations. According to Helena Niemirowska, who shared the avant-garde thesis, to become an artist the modern architect had to…

"You, my friend, are a gaycist": gay representations and heteronormativity on the comedy series Happy Endings

2014

Fiktiivisten representaatioiden laatu on tärkeässä asemassa. Tämä tutkielma käsittelee homorepresentaatioita ja heteronormatiivisuutta amerikkalaisessa komediasarjassa Happy Endings…

Typology and Representation of Alterations in Territorial Units: A Proposal

2018

Abstract This article proposes a typology of boundary changes in territorial units at two points in time. The different types of changes are organized in a hierarchy and represented homogeneously, independently of the number of territorial units involved and of the changes to them. Each alteration is described precisely and unambiguously, and it is codified to allow the information to be treated automatically. In addition to providing efficient storage of the information about these changes, a canonical representation facilitates the automatic detection of inconsistencies in the database. At the same time, the typology allows us to define backward and forward equivalence rules, which helps …

Behind the Cosmo-girl : Women’s representations and the brand of Cosmopolitan magazine

2009

Kriittisen diskurssintutkimuksen lähtökohta on ajatus kielestä todellisuutta ja kulttuurisia arvoja muokkaavana ja uusintavana välineenä. Siksi totuttuihin puhetapoihin eli diskursseihin tulee kiinnittää huomiota, jos halutaan muuttaa yhteiskunnan epätasa-arvoa tuottavia rakenteita tai nostaa näkyville erilaisiin ihmisryhmiin liitettyjä piileviä oletuksia. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus on lisätä tietoa kulttuurisista naisrepresentaatioistamme kriittisen diskurssintutkimuksen metodeja hyödyntäen. Valitsin tutkittavaksi aineistokseni kaksi artikkelia Cosmopolitanista. Pyrin tuomaan uuden näkökulman naistenlehtien analyysiin vertaamalla artikkeleista löytyvää naiskuvaa Cosmopolitanin imagoon ny…

New trends in teacher’s education. Educational placement of the adopted child

2015

Abstract In Italy, the number of adopted school-age children is increasing. According to the Commission of Intercountry Adoption (2013), 3106 children were adopted, 47.5% of them are between 5 and 9 years old. The present action-research aims at exploring the spread of good approaches in schools in terms of welcoming of adopted children. For this purpose, 268 teachers of primary schools were involved in analyzing the social representation about adopted children and their family. The results show a simplified vision of the adoptive family, which is described as heroic family or, on the contrary, as a family with difficulty.
